AMEX have tonight revised down the points bonus sign up offer for the Velocity Platinum Card to 80,000 points. While it was previously 100,000 points, 80,000 is still a great deal and can net you some fabulous travel opportunities on Virgin (or Singapore Krisflyer, if you transfer your points across).

You must sign up with a direct referral link to take advantage of this offer (my direct link is here). The card comes with a $349 fee, which is easily offset by the following benefits:
  • 80,000 Velocity points, as mentioned above
  • A return domestic flight between a number of Australian cities (including Perth to the east coast)
  • 2 complimentary Virgin Australia lounge invitations
  • Complimentary access to the highly regarded American Express lounge at Sydney international, and
  • Various comprehensive insurance policies
Many thanks to anyone who chooses to use my link: http://amex.com.au/refer/adeleeLshL

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about this card and rightly so, as with a lot of things - people rave about them for a reason. With this card, it's all about the 80k Velocity points currently on offer when applying via a referral link. Whilst this has been revised down from the previous 100k it still represents pretty amazing value, given the $349 annual fee! I only recently signed up for this card and for me it was all about the large number of bonus Velocity points being offered.

So why would you want to apply for this card? And it would it be good for you? It's certainly very popular:
  • Want to cash in on the sign-on bonus of 80,000 Velocity points - I value Velocity points at 2.0c+/pt - so this alone, to me, is worth $1600! For an annual fee of $349, how can you go wrong! Totally awesome! If you were going to buy a Virgin, Singapore Airlines or Etihad Business class or First class ticket and you were to use these bonus point instead, you could easily double their value. $3800+ value for a $349 outlay! Now you're talking!
  • Virgin / Velocity flyers who want a good value premium card with some quality perks!
Apart from the massive sign-on bonus, the best points (bad pun intended!) of this card are:
  • The free return VA flight each year - that alone easily pays for the annual fee - destinations list here - value $400+to me
  • Two VA lounge passes each year - value to me around $65+ (some may value them more, others less)
  • Two entries to the very nice SYD AMEX lounge (I certainly recommend it!) - value to me around $80+ (some would value this much more highly for sure!)
  • Domestic and international travel insurance - I wouldn't want to put a value on this - it depends so much on your travel patterns and if you consider the AMEX insurance offering as meeting your needs
  • A traveller friendly points earning profile (ie up to 3 pts / $ on travel spend)
The points earn structure of this card is really well suited to those that fly Virgin, enjoy eating out or want to earn a good dose of points on their foreign currency spend. The points earn structure on this card is a follows:

  • 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia and on Virgin Australia spend
  • 2 points per $1 spent on airlines, accommodation, other travel and foreign currency spend
  • 0.5 points per $1 on govt charges, utilities and telcoms etc - the AMEX usual - you often use Post BillPay (and / or PayPal) to boost this to a much more exciting 1pt/$1
  • 1 point per $1 on everything else
In summary, this is a great deal the 80,000k Velocity points on offer for the $349 annual fee is hard to turn down. When you take into account the free return flight on offer it is really 80,000k VA points for nothing (or better). Don't forget to qualify for 100k bonus points you need to spend $2000 on the card within the first three months. AMEX is offering referrers (me in this case) 20k points for each referral - even without that I'd still recommend the card - it's all about the 80k bonus points!

Not throw wet blanked on the party, but I want to stress that whilst applying for great credit card offers, like this, can be great value (and even addictive in its own way) - it isn't for everyone - please only apply for credit you can afford! No sign-on bonus, however lucrative, is worth a lifetime of debt!!

For anyone kind enough to use my Referral Link - my heart felt appreciation - I'll certainly be putting any referrals to good use![/B]

+1 to post above.

I really, really like this card. Two weeks ago I booked my free return flight (CBR-ADL). If I was paying cash, I would have been over $500 out of pocket. That already covered the $349 annual fee.

Anyway, throwing my hat in the ring for anyone who needs a referral to get the 80000 points.

Dear AFF friends

My wife and I are planning a trip back to Europe for my brother's wedding next year. We can't wait. Any referral bonus points we could earn would be gratefully received and hopefully put forward to our FIRST EVER business class seats!! Here's hoping.

If you use the link below, we'll receive 20,000 velocity bonus points. And you'll get a fantastic value credit card (as expertly described above), including your very own 80,000 velocity points after minimum spend and a free domestic flight to name but a few:

It is Summer time! Christmas and New Year is around the corner. Have you been thinking about your holiday plans around Christmas and New Year yet?

American Express is a company that keeps giving!

Oh, American Express have done it again! They are splashing out more Velocity points. To sum it up:

The free domestic flight covers most of the annual fee already.

Most important of all, 80000 bonus Velocity points can be converted to 59259 Singapore Krisflyer miles. It can get you award ticket on Singapore Airlines (as an example):

- Sydney - Singapore - Hong Kong on Business One-Way (46750 KF miles)
- Sydney - Singapore - Rest of South East Asia Business One-Way (46750 KF miles)

But spending a little more you can get the following award ticket:
- Sydney - Singapore - Hong Kong on A380 Suites/First One-Way (63750 KF miles)
- Sydney - Singapore - Tokyo on Business One-Way (65875 KF miles)

If you spend even more on your card to accumulate more miles, you can go the following:
- Sydney - Singapore - Tokyo on A380 Suites/First One-Way (80750 KF miles)
- Sydney - Singapore - European Cities on Business One-Way (80750 KF miles)

It is a fantastic deal. If you want all these benefits, you should apply on the following link:

Thank you to Sherwin_7 for kindly using our referral link. Very kind of you.

My wife and I are less than 100,000 points from all of our family flying business class for the first time back to London. Ever! We have another 8/9 months to accumulate the points, and any more referral bonuses would be massively appreciated:

A reminder that anyone posting a referral link must follow the guidelines specified in the sticky at the start of the referral sub-forum.

Specifically:

Update 31 March 2015: Just to be 100% clear. Both the Referrer and Referee must receive the benefit which needs to be clearly defined, transparent and stated in the post. Links to "affiliate-type" sites where the Referrer receives an incentive/bonus, and there is no clear benefit to the Referee for using that link is not acceptable.

Hi I have the card and wondering do I have to notify AMEX that I am going to USA in a month?
and I want to utilise the travel insurance
or is it all set and ready to go

When I have contacted them to advise them of travel, they actually weren't too fussed. I think they expect cardholders to travel - or don't have quite the same overseas monitoring that other cards do.

The insurance is automatic as long as you have complied with the spending/booking requirements.

You don't need to do so, but there is an online contact message which is headed to advise them of your travel. I have used it in the past.

You certainly don't need to notify them - all you need to do is meet the activation conditions and then it all set and ready to go.

Enjoy your trip!
