    ACCC slams loyalty schemes

I agree with the AFF response article, except for one detail about carrier surcharges: "We accept that these charges exist, however, more transparency about the existence and amount of these carrier charges is required." These charges started off as fuel surcharges after massive fuel price...

    SMS Login Verification - Argh

I know. The comment I was replying to was talking about "build TOTP functionality into the Qantas app itself".

    Beware of DCC in Europe

If you convert $50 to THB, the 220THB ATM fee comes to 20.2%. If you're prepared to swallow that ludicrous fee, why care about possible DCC being added to it? The banks apparently take the same attitude: If you're prepared to pay the ATM charge, they might as well skim some more off you. As...

    SMS Login Verification - Argh

That's a wild assumption. I have logins on over 500 web sites. I have no desire to download hundreds of apps in order to be able to use them. You get issues with updates, whether they work on your particular phone, whether they drain the battery by being badly behaved, the tracking done by...

    Beware of DCC in Europe

Generally 3% on Australian cards. And that is why they do it! The threshold for "not enough to go through the chargeback hassle" needs to be under 10c to stop these thieves. There is one way to stop DCC. Use Amex. Then be super vigilant at any place that doesn't accept Amex.

Time needed for transfer at LAX?

Do you feel lucky and are you fast? And are you in economy? There are a pile of flights just from Australia that arrive at TBIT between 6 and 6:30am. (QF, DL, VA and AA from SYD, QF from MEL, QF from BNE.) Last time I arrived on one of those, nobody was allowed to disembark any of those...

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

i.e. They would have dealt with it if my BR flight was out of BKK. Otherwise, their position was for me to speak to ground staff meeting my TG flight at ICN.

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

As I said, they refused to do anything until I arrived at ICN. From there, the only other direct flight to KHH was CI, which was (by then) fully booked.

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

Mine wasn't handled as nicely. With my LM award, HKT-BKK-ICN-KHH (TG/TG/BR), BR sent me a text message advising of their cancellation after I'd already checked in for the flights. They didn't call. I spoke to BR staff at BKK and they refused to do anything unless it was an ex-BKK flight. There...

Brave. I guess you're hoping the EVA strike ends or doesn't happen to hit your flights!

    Anyone know this bali scam?

You can use this to your advantage. In places like that, I leave my real wallet in the safe and only carry an old wallet with just a bit more money than I'll need. Sometimes the easiest response to a pushy seller or scammer is to pull out my wallet and open it up. Yes, I really am only carrying...

    Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

With Ansett out of the way, Qantas totally hiked their points at that time, because they had no competition in the full-service market in Australia at all. Another way to put it is that, with no competition, Qantas inflated their award costs to be the worst value in the world and did it so...

You can pay in COP or USD. If the COP is dropping in value, you can shave a little more off the cost by paying in COP, depending on what you credit card issuer decides to do. The rate may end up being worse by the time the transaction is processed too.

CA pulls out of PVG to MEL/SYD

Don't care. Great bed, comfortable cabin, oh, and Maggie Beer ice cream. Still, PVG can be horrible to transit, so I'll try PEK this year instead.

CA pulls out of PVG to MEL/SYD

17, at quick count, plus a few more in F. Apart from being one of the best flat beds, CA also keeps the cabin temperature decent. Sometimes some of those "top tier" Asian carriers keep their cabins just short of volcanic ash temperature. Way more important to be comfortable than have premium...

CA pulls out of PVG to MEL/SYD

I only just noticed the news and agree with all the above. CA is one of the most underrated J experiences. I can't think of another airline on which I can fully stretch out and have neither my head nor toes touching either end, unless I fly in F instead. The wide cushion for feet is great. I...

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

June HKT-BKK-ICN-KHH (TG/TG/BR) in J. Available on the web site search, but blew up at the passenger entry stage, so had to phone it in. 36k + USD57 (not the best value ever, but the alternative paid tickets are either expensive or have horrible routes and/or timings)

Why I am ditching QF F/J longhaul, despite loving it.

I used to fly them a lot and it could go either way. Some were jaded and bored, while others still enjoyed providing service, which mean that some were like unhappy robots, while a few were like your nicest grandma. I can certainly see the comparison with QF. Best international crews in recent...

Points Count [How many do you have?]

Quite agree that the fees are ridiculous, but it's simple enough to use QF points to fly on other carriers that charge little/no fees (AA, AS, EI, etc) and use those carriers' schemes to fly on QF. Now that QF is greatly limiting awards to partners, that's harder, but it mostly means I fly QF...
