I have this scenario and inquired about cancelling my platinum edge, I was told I would need to transfer the points first. I wonder if cancelling the card with the ascent programme attached would cause the gateway account to be created (and therefore bonus points to post?)

Curious regarding the "gateway" program... I have platinum edge and essential, that essential earns points into the same balance pool as they edge at 1:1. Wonder if that might end up happening here?

Qantas t&c says it could be used at a travel agent. How would amex then know what exact purchase was (whether it included a QF flight number)?
