I'm not sure if upgrading on the day increases your points/SC earn, but JAL Explorer Pass tickets credit as "Flexible Economy", bizarrely enough! Last week I flew HKD - HND on a JAL Explorer Pass ticket, and received 400pts/20SC for the flight: A pleasant surprise, as I thought I'd get nothing.

I was considering staying in the city, but because of the tight flight turnarounds (and wanting to spend the most time I can in the lounges), I think I'll definitely stay...
