General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Now you're mixing your metaphors, and only Shakespeare can get away with that!

General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Who said it was going to end? We may not develop immunity to the virus, which means a vaccine may be impossible and herd immunity unattainable.

Apparently QF28 on its way back from Santiago is the last ever QF 747 flight

Qantas wanted to start flying PER-JNB instead, with feeder flights similar to QF9/QF10 MEL-PER-LHR, but their dispute with Perth Airport has prevented this.

Does Closing Beaches Make Any Sense?

UV-A and UV-B penetrate the atmosphere. UV-C does not. Hence if you read the literature on sunscreen, they protect against UV-A and UV-B, not UV-C. It is UV-C which kills bacteria and deactivates virus particles. That's why the light inside my pond filter is a UV-C light. And also in the...

Does Closing Beaches Make Any Sense?

Fresh air may have some generally benefical health effects but it has no disinfectant properties whatsoever. The disinfectant component of UV light is UV-C - AKA hard UV. The UV-C from the sun is completely absorbed by the ozone layer and atmosphere. None of it reaches sunbakers at Bondi. You...

Qantas group to cut all International routes and stand down two thirds of its staff

I wonder what the equivalent of staff travel will be. 😂

Rubbish article: Health Authorities Apparently Lied About Wearing Masks. [Incorrect]

This is relevant to bacteria, but not to viruses. Viruses are not alive and cannot breed. They do not have all the genetic information they need to replicate. They need to insert themselves into a host and force it to replicate them. So they cannot breed in a mask.

Rubbish article: Health Authorities Apparently Lied About Wearing Masks. [Incorrect]

I don't want to leap into the bubbling cauldron of controversy about the effectiveness of masks. However I do think it is important that health advice is given without any trace of spin whatsoever. There is a legitimate argument that priority should be given to health workers as there is a...

Qantas Club Lifetime Membership Benefits Removal

I have about two dozen orange priority tags. I save them when I remove the bag tags and use them in circumstances where I am not eligible for priority. I would be happy to donate them if it would help the OP. Maybe we could take up a collection, I am sure others have kept theirs.

Qantas Club Lifetime Membership Benefits Removal

Incidentally the bright orange priority tags are mostly to make you feel good. Baggage handling at major airports is automated by systems which scan the bar codes and the information in your luggage tag is what determines your priority. Unless you are flying somewhere without automated systems.

Qantas Club Lifetime Membership Benefits Removal

Whatever else it may be, this isn't a breach of contract. If the contract says Qantas can unilaterally change the terms at any time, they can. The fundamental premise of contract law is that the parties are free to enter into the contract or not. Accordingly, despite limited restrictions, the...

I didn't think it meant free-flowing champagne but I wondered if anyone actually knew the details.

Anyone know what this part means? "In this climate you may also notice some temporary changes to your inflight and lounge experience. "

Qantas group to cut all International routes and stand down two thirds of its staff

But the R0 of a pathogen is not fixed. It depends on behaviour. That is the point of measures such as social distancing and lockdowns. We can actually reduce the R0. In fact we must reduce it to less than 1. That means each infected person infects fewer than 1 other person. Only then will cases...

Qantas group to cut all International routes and stand down two thirds of its staff

Waiving fees is giving them money. The total figure was quoted as $715 million so $400 million is not an unreasonable guess at Qantas' share. I am sure there will be more assistance, my point is it should not be "no strings". It should come with guarantees. The point of assistance is not to...

Qantas group to cut all International routes and stand down two thirds of its staff

No mention of how Qantas is using the hundreds of millions the government just gave them. If their annual wages bill is $4 billion then $400 million would pay that for more than a month. But there is no mention of paying employees a month's pay in excess of entitlements.

I believe they are going to stop over in PTP (Point-à Pitre, Guadeloupe) for the time being acording to this article.
