    Dress Codes when Cruising

Tell me again how much I never need to go on a cruise.

Can you bring your own food into airport lounges?

The stench of Maccas is almost as offensive as durian. I’m not surprised that they want to keep it out.

    Scrapping Aircraft

Obviously not a pilot. They all have their individual personalities. Some you'll love, and others hate.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 Crashes in Kazakhstan

There's an ILS for 26, which would have gotten them below that cloud base. But, in the other direction, only RNAV or NDB. RNAV minima would be around what they'd need, but of course, that's what's being jammed. No chance with NDB. If the ILS for 26 wasn't working, not much chance of getting in.

    The FR24 appreciation thread

Yes. Probably double the drag.... Well, I certainly wouldn't. The aircraft tells me all I need to know. Oh, a random person. Which is why it's a waste of time.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 Crashes in Kazakhstan

According to the raw data the aircraft’s flight path was oscillatory for over 70 minutes prior to the accident, with height deviations of +/-8,000’. It almost impacted the water a number of times.

    The FR24 appreciation thread

I have no idea what the actual issue was, but...if you have a gear issue, you don't cycle it. So, a dirty diversion to Sydney is almost certainly not possible.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 Crashes in Kazakhstan

Never read any comments, but if there's raw data you can sometimes make up your own mind. I wouldn't expect terminal radar to be able to see a SAM, though I suppose it's not all that relevant. Presumably with IFF turned on. Airliners aren't all that fast, especially down low, so it smacks of...

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 Crashes in Kazakhstan

It may have started as a simple diversion, but then converted into a fight for control of the aircraft. There probably wasn't as much choice involved as you imagine. BTW, you don't generally return to the start point in any diversion. There should be closer alternatives Lots of small holes, all...

    Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Well, I hope they find it again.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 Crashes in Kazakhstan

It looks like an aircraft that is being flown by manipulation of the power alone, and loss of hydraulics will leave you in that situation. A landing with any survivors at all is a great outcome in that case. Water is not soft, and anyone who survives the impact is in immediate danger of...

    Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Mechanical (and sometimes medical) doesn't necessarily put any huge hurry into things. You could, for instance, have an issue with something that will affect a required approach (i.e. Cat II/III), but which isn't required behind you. And that would mean you might not be able to go on, but...

    Ask The Pilot

That's certainly true, but it also depends upon the cap/hat. I never wore the white monstrosity that's part of the current QF uniform, and took some delight handing it back, still in it's wrapping. Looks terrible, and simply didn't fit (anyone). And the argument goes the other way too. Aprons...

    Ask The Pilot

Unless it’s about a million degrees, ties on. My assumption has been that pilots who look like slobs will fly the same way.

    Flight crew too busy

I guess this is a minor point, but you’re talking about the cabin crew. The flight crew will never respond to your calls, no matter how plaintive.

    Ask The Pilot

You very funny person. In over 30 years of flying for QF, I had very few Xmas days that were free of any involvement with the airline. I never wore the last QF wings. I despised the unform overall, but the wings were especially easy to discard. I even slid some navy wings into the mix for a while.

    Ask The Pilot

There were a couple of systems in use during my time in QF. Most of the time, the sims came up roughly every three months, though later they tried a system with two sessions, a day or so apart, every six months. Because your livelihood depends on getting a tick at the end of the session...

    Spurious check in notification

That was my first thought too, but no links.

    Spurious check in notification

Has anyone ever received a spurious check in notice? Got a message from Virgin today, inviting me to check in for my flight to Melbourne. Only problem is that I'm not flying anywhere any time soon.
