Airline points used to book hotels

I don't have any CC points (I'm retired now, so nobody wants to give me a credit card!). I just use one-world points through Malaysia Airlines. I'm probably going to switch to another airline as they don't do Brisbane (again! 🤬) any more.

Airline points used to book hotels

I'm not sure what the conversion rate is. It never seems to be consistent, so I just go for the best value. I get enough points each year flying to the UK or Europe business class to book about 4 hotels. This is almost perfect for my European travel needs. I don't get enough points for...

What does "half past one" mean to an American?

    USA doesn't use 24 hour clock ?

In France, the 24h clock is used normally for times. Italy gets more confusing. For normal speech, 12h clock is used. For any kind of appointment or meeting, or scheduled time, 24h clock is used.

    USA doesn't use 24 hour clock ?

The railways in NSW actually do use times later than 2400 in their timetable, at least when designing them. Basically any train leaving before 1159 will use the originating time as the start, and all the way to the end of the journey. So a train might arrive at 2530 on Tuesday, which is 0130 on...

What kind of QF trickery is this - changing your ticket to a later departure time when there's a flight at the original departure time?

Emirates did this to me in June. I asked my travel agent to get it fixed, and emirates agreed it had been a mistake and fixed it pretty much immediately.

    USA doesn't use 24 hour clock ?

In the UK and Australia, 'half two' is half past two.

    USA doesn't use 24 hour clock ?

My greatest problem with 24h time is in Europe. First of all I have to translate the words into English, then translate the time into 12h! This is infinitely worse in the Netherlands, where "10 past half seventeen" means 4:40 pm. Try working that out after imbibing!

    Emirates business class catering

I had no issues with emirates in June and August, flying to the UK and back. It might be random.

Have you applied for your Director ID?

Did mine with no drama. Had to provide all the information that the government already has on me, of course. Because, how would they possibly know it? They only provide the information themselves.

    MEL taxi scam

I took a ride with one of these fellows at Melbourne many years ago. It turned out to be a very useful service, and I used it for many years. I could book a car and be picked up exactly when I wanted. I also had a bill sent to me every month instead of having to record every journey for tax. I...

    cruise surprises

Drinks packages are fine, but I don't recommend them. They tend to encourage you to drink to take advantage of them, really. I would, however, because I'm a dedicated drinker. Even so, I don't buy them because I prefer to have more choice, being a quite discerning drinker. The ones with booze I...

    Emirates complaints contact

I couldn't even contact them in the UK. I don't believe they have anyone there. I almost missed my car, because the driver couldn't contact them when their own system failed to contact me (they didn't give him contact details, he had to go through their system).

Australian traveller compensated by AA after being ‘wedged between two obese siblings’

My shoulders don't fit into any economy seat. They used to be a tight fit in many business class seats too, but not these days. As another here said, travelling with the wif and kids was OK because they're each about 2/3 of my width. I'm not fat, just tall and wide.

    Dubai Connect

I enjoyed my emirates flights this year, but their supporting services leave a great deal to be desired. I was waiting for my car in the UK. Properly booked, uk phone number supplied. Imwas waiting for 30 minutes PAST the time booked. Usually they turn up 15 minutes early at least. I was...

Australian traveller compensated by AA after being ‘wedged between two obese siblings’

Ha ha! One trip I took with my nephew, we sat in the aisle and window seats, leaving the centre seat free. It was a non allocation flight, and we paid for priority boarding, and got row 1 by the door. We're both about 6' 3", with very wide shoulders. He couldn't lean away from centre because...

    EV car rental - experiences?

My only experience of EVs in Europe is the incredible jams of cars endlessly circling at motorway service stations waiting for a space to charge. I automatically avoid any service station that displays the charging symbols. I also imagine that working out how to use the charging systems could...

Weirdest item you've seen taken as carry-on?

Not strange, but unusual. A long, long time ago... I was leaving India after my first trip there. After 6 months in India, I had collected a considerable amount of additional luggage. I had one of those fantastic Indian Army bedrolls for all my clothes. Basically you keep your clothes in a...
