It's two seperate flights. The VA codeshare flight (VA6135) is the CBR-MEL-DOH QR service which switches to a 4:10pm departure time the following day.

I'd guess it's more about which departure banks in Doha that QR want the VA flights to feed.

There is no self bag drop for any airline at SYD T2. You have to drop your bag at a manned desk even if you use a kiosk to print your bag tag. Self bag drops will be added during the upcoming terminal upgrades.
