May I ask... were these return flights from Australia? I thought if the outwards flight from AU was cancelled, then the return flight was automatically cancelled and was no longer a valid ticket.

It was clearly never meant to apply to involuntary cancellations originally. Aunt Betty and Flight Centre have only recently 'clarified' the T&C to say the fee applies to both. It is being challenged with a number of consumer bodies and I would be surprised if they get away with it.

When I checked Aunt Betty’s website today there was a link to a Google form you could submit that includes the option of requesting a refund, possibly due to change in policy by some airlines eg Singapore Airlines. Things are changing, a bit of consumer pushback?
