I'm flying in J SYD SIN later in the week, and been mulling over a points upgrade wait list request to R class on the 388.
I figured that I probably wouldn't land it and didn't want to burn a bunch of VA points in the process (transferring into KF and then back out).

I just got a call from someone in the local SQ office offering me a 'special promotional upgrade' to suites for AU$600 (or maybe it was $650). I asked her to email me the details to give me a bit of time to think about it.

Given I was willing to spend ~50k velocity points on it, I'm pretty tempted, special occasion and not much chance to do it, and all that.

Thoughts? J -> R worth $650? :)

(Edit: it was just for the one sector, not the return trip else I wouldn't hesitate)

I probably would for that price, particularly if you're unlikely to do it otherwise.

Im definitely leaning yes. I don't fly SQ often and the only other way I'd do it is with points, but most of my travel is to the US at the moment...

At that price... jump on it!

You'll be able to get much more than $600 worth from your 50K Velocity points saved.

Yep that was the rationale I went with. My velocity points have mostly been used to upgrade my VA transpacs to J from Y/W fares and at 45k each way are a better spend of points, I think.
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to enjoy a sizeable chunk of the upgrade cost in Krug alone, assuming that's still what's being served on that route :)

Now just to decide whether to book the cook or not... Appreciate any suggestions/thoughts!

You'll be glad to have done it - just back on SQ 221 to Syd and while still too short an onight flight to eat drink enjoy and sleep, it was a lovely experience for the Mrs and I.

Wudnt book the cook unless you have a driving desire for something particular on the btc menu - on the way up to SIN the Mrs had her chosen btc Salmon main dish, but only after an entree of salmon 3 ways (hot cold smoke plus grave lax)..

You can book the cook if you want - but half the fun is turning up on the day and seeing what they have to offer. I know many people like to micro-manage their travel experience, but for SQ it's not necessary. They look after you pretty well.

If you were flying weekly you might want to book the cook to add some variety I guess.

Do you need to book the lobster?

That's a brilliant price. Who's your sales contact?

I spoke to her twice and yet still couldn't catch her name.
My booking updated right away to reflect the first sector being in an A fare bucket, the rest of mine being in the cheapest J fare code (D) - I booked during a deep discount sale earlier in the year.

Rather than being issued a new e-ticket, I've been sent an "Upgrade coupon" with remarks "Upgrade sydsin sq 232 17mar from d class to a class special promo". This sector shows up in my booking as not yet ticketed -- when I queried that I was told that it was normal and that I had to check in at the airport rather than be able to check in online.

Interestingly on the conversation, she mentioned that she was calling me early in the day as "I was a loyal passenger with gold status". I hold no KF status and am platinum with VA, which I had attached to my booking. The last time I flew SQ was in 2013.
She said she was going to be calling others who were in J class on that flight I suspect until she found someone to take up the promo.

Based on seat map I think they've only sold one of these magic coupons, so I consider myself lucky for having called back and said yes haha!

I wonder if VA plat = KF gold in SQs eyes?

Good price (IMHO) If it were me, I would have jumped at it as well.

EDIT: Actually, isn't KF gold their highest colour, which would make sense I guess?

I haven't travelled SQ since they integrated the VA status onto the boarding pass, but from memory something does get pulled in (from reading other threads). It'd make sense, and pleases me.
I also wonder if it would have any bearing on SQ wait listing, though in order to request that you need your KF number on the booking so I'm guessing not...

Also does anyone know if SQ give out the PJs in F for SQ232? I won't need them on the way over but on the way back I'm flying a red eye in J, where they don't get handed out. If not I will BYO.

I can't quite figure out what all the SQ staff know about me. I don't seem to get any recognition as WP when flying (check-in only, since they have to priority tag my bag, issue express passes etc.) so it's funny to hear they picked you as a 'Gold' member. You should have quizzed them on it!

I've put some recent bookings through my mother's KF account as she's KF silver. Figured this would do better for the waitlists than my VA WP status.

Not sure if they'll get offered, but fairly sure you can always ask for them.
