Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice for a hypothetical situation where I'm flying in J and my wife is flying in Y on an international long haul flight on SQ.

Would it be possible for me to trade seats with my wife because I'm such a nice guy for the whole duration of the flight even though my seat is ticketed under my name? We would not be swapping in and out during the flight as I know its definitely not allowed. I'm guessing I may have to either change the name closer to travel date or wait until the seat belt sign is off after take off to change?

I'm about to book some award seats and we still haven't decided who will sit where and I don't want to lock in my name if we can't change. I might play it safe and just book the J seat under her name.

Any advice would be appreciated!

victaa

I've done this on 3 or 4 different airlines and never an issue. Always ask upon boarding aircraft to swap. Ground staff never definitively confirm.

Is there a reason it would be better for you to book it under your name?

If not then just book it in your wife's name and avoid any potential problems.

Swapping, even once, is at the discretion of cabin crew and if they say no then that's it.

Absolutely no problem at all - notify cabin crew when boarding - they will readily accomodate you. In fact no prob to swap 1/2 way and share the J exp - just remember only one meal serving for seat. Indeed I have witnessed this multiple times and never an issue.

FTR - I am currently in PEK - I flew MEL-SIN-PVG on May 5 with 3 of my sisters - myself and 1 sister ticketed in R / 2 sisters ticketed in J - I swapped out for one of the J sisters and not an issue. We are also doing same on return PEK-SIN-MEL on May 14 - I will swap out R then F to a sister again - they will indeed share 6 R / F sectors between them - crew on outbound looked after them like they were Queens - but this is SQ so is to be expected.

Swapping during flight can well become an issue. Some crews might turn a blind eye, but it would not be 'allowed'. On the other hand, swapping once and staying in the seat should cause no problems at all.

Emirates didn't like this when MrP asked about it. Luckily they upgraded me at the gate which wasn't asked for nor expected.

I wonder how the other J paid pax felt about all this swapping?

One swap is no big deal, most passengers probably don't even notice it.

We had a J pax join an F pax in their seat for a pre dinner drink and it was only by chance that I even noticed it occuring. The FAs are usually good at making sure things are pretty subtle.

What has it got to do with any other pax? 'All this swapping' totally incorrect description - have seen single pax only swap over on individual flt on multiple different flts - doesn't involve a doz pax swapping on same flt.

But anyway swapping mid flight is OT as it is not what OP asked - i merely added the info to show just how accomodating SQ are to prem pax. Again victaa - just seek permission from crew on boarding - there will not be an issue.

If you want a future, like the idea of marital harmony etc., book J for yr wife and Y for yourself.. It took quite a long time to be forgiven for booking the mrs down the back when she decided to join me on a HK trip, even tho there were No J seats avail, points or outright, at the time or at checkin!

Rookie Error that one! But we all do similar early on......like when my wife said that I did not have to buy her an Anniversary Present, and I didn't!

Thanks all for your opinions it really helps!

We are looking to travel to Japan from Perth but we are a family of 4 with a 3yo toddler and 8 month new born. I do have enough points for 2 x J tickets so one of us would have to suck it up in Y with the new born while the toddler rides with a parent in J.

I figured it would be better for the newborn to ride economy with wife for feeds but I figured we could each have a go (ie. I'm in Y on the way up there, she's in Y on the way back down) to both experience J. Also I think fellow J passengers

I would have thought mum and bub would be more comfortable in J.

I thought wife and bub in J with toddler would be a bit too much for her to handle alone though I'd be happy flying kid free in Y

Crickey mate - you never mentioned 'billy lids' in your OP - totally diff scenario now - I have NFI on baby / infant / child policy - this you will have to clarify with SQ - others here will have info / exp when travelling on rdpt tix with child on tow - but swapping out where kids also involved certainly changes things.

The devil is always in the (often unspoken) detail

The toddler and infant will be charged differently for their tickets so the kids should not move or swap at all.

option 1) Suck it up in Y with the infant. At 8 months you should be in the safe zone still and the cabin crew will have pity on you (be sure to mention your wife is in J for extra crew points).

option 2) mum+infant in business which is only 1x award ticket instead of 2 and you'll save a bunch of points.

These look like the best options to me.
