Hi all,

I was booking fares with AA (via my TA) a few weeks ago and I asked about KUPs. Unfortunately all (bar one) of my AA flights was bundled into the QF ticket (at an excellent price, I should add*) which meant I couldn't make them KUPs. I got a quote for the one remaining flight (MCI-DFW) as a KUP at about $30 more than a semi-flexible (not sure what class, but not Y) economy fare.

When I actually had it ticketed, the fare difference was only $7.20. So 60 status credits instead of 10, for $7.20 = $0.144 per Status Credit! If only they were that cheap to begin with, I could re-qualify for WP for $172.80! :D

Just thought I'd share. It always pays to ask about YUPs/KUPs on AA. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

*$2,580AUD for MEL-LAX-DFW / MCI-DFW-LAX-SYD, semi-flexible. Pretty decent I think!

Febs - would you go so far as to recommend your TA to others (i.e. me?) - I wouldn't mind having someone on hand and haven't used anyone good yet in Sydney...

Sorry mate, but absolutely not! With the exception of the excellent pricing they get us (which is no doubt due to us having several thousand employees, many of whom travel frequently) I really can't say much good about them. I really need to hold their hand through every step of booking my flights/accommodation.

See http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...change-fully-flexible-20392-2.html#post277570 for just a taste. ;)

Pardon my ignorance, what are K-YUPs? And how do I get it? I've used search thread but no luck.
I'm not a frequent traveller to the US - twice a year - but maximising sc is a desirable challenge!
Apologies if I'm asking a silly question.

G'day Anthony, welcome to AFF. :D

As I posted earlier today:
See this thread:

[OR}

... enter YUP or KUP or "Instant Upgrade" into the Google search field at the top right of this page:

and click on the [Search] Button.

n00b alert.

So if I understand correctly, when booking a trip to the US (say NYC) you would be better off booking the AA legs in the middle yourself (and try and do an instant upgrade) and the return AU to LA on Qantas. Is that right?

Welcome :)

It depends.

If you have a spare $2000 you can earn 640 SC by flying across the US (via a *very* indirect route :) )on YUPP fares. Otherwise, spend $300 and buy the cheapest economy ticket and earn 50.

Just buying a KUPP LAX-JFK ticket is not that efficient (in terms of dollars per status credit) as it costs $1,160 for 200 SCs.

Correction. Make it 780 SC - I just found a slightly better routing for the same price :)

how indirect are we talking :p Im planning a trip to the US for next xmas...

I don't want to give too much away about the route ATM - it seems like a good deal and I don't want it to disappear before I book it!

However, it involves 3 stopovers including an overnight in Florida and will take about 36 hours in total (each way).

PM me if you really want the details - but looking is half the fun!

Yep, pretty much. My fave is the LAX-SFO which can be done for about $300 and gets you heaps of SC's too.

There are specific search engines just to target these routes.

In January I am travelling on AA with a YUP routing ONT*-DFW-MIA-MEX vv that cost ~$850 and should earn at least 520 SC's ...

*ONT is Ontario Airport, California (~100Km east of LAX)

Not sure of the cost to do it directly, but DFW-ANC is a pretty solid little earner in F! I included this as part of my 6 x domestic US flights on a DONE4 last year...built up a huge amount of SC's!

(Actual routing was JFK-DFW-ANC-DFW-LAS-LAX-SYD) which was a good mix between earning SC's and actually visiting places I wanted to visit. :)

That would be the Kiwi pronunciation of Mexico City, I would ixpict ;)

Yup - that's the routing I'm flying whilst here in the US - just about to board the MEX-MIA return segment. Wish me luck with the US Customs and Border Protection folk!

You should consider getting yourself an APEC card, if your work travel qualifies you (Mexico is one of the economies you can get approved for). Remember I mentioned on Facebook about how I made it from Plane to Kerb in LAX in about 10 minutes once?

The other day I did it in about 7 minutes. :)

Literally - straight to immi counter, smile, fingerprint, straight to carousel where bag was already doing the rounds, straight through customs and out the door. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.
