In the town which has the highest concentration of Michelin stars of just about anywhere surely the question is why not Chinese in HK.

Luxury on a budget doesnt really exist in HK; Hutong is great, but it could easily cost 100-150 a head.

Agree with this but HK has plenty of value at all price points, so set your budget and you'll eat really well. What you may miss is some of the smarminess of some top end Australian restaurants, some would say that's not necessarily a bad thing.

How about the Langham Place hotel in Mongkok? It's a 5 star hotel (#9 on Trip Advisor), located above the Mongkok MTR station.

There are often specials for the better and higher floor rooms at around A$250 a night. Pity you leave so early they do a great breakfast buffet.

Because apart from steak, all fine dining in HKG is miles ahead of anything we have here in Australia. I embarrassed when I take clients from HKG to places like Quay in SYD or Vue de Monde in MEL because I know the food and service is sub par on every level compared to HKG.

Actually I disagree...
We have given up going to Western style fine dining places in HKG as we've always been disappointed by virtue of the fact that we find the produce / freshness of ingredients in itself cannot compare to Australia...
Well service is maybe a different debate...

Which restaurants in HKG are you talking about? And which restaurants in Australia are you comparing them to?

Say Robuchon, Amber in HKG... they were not bad... but nothing so special compared to similar places in Australia...
Bo Innovation was good, but that's because they are Asian fusion so its not something that has a direct comparable in Australia...
Compare to Quay, Sepia, VDM...

Is there anywhere obvious that I am missing?

Really? Ok. I respect your opinion but you would be the first I've heard who puts the likes of Caprice, Liberty, Amber and L'Atelier as being below Quay and VDM et al.

I personally am disappointed almost every time I walk into a fine dining restaurant in Sydney or Melbourne compared with the experience you get in HKG or Europe.

I will agree however when you go to a restaurant like Rockpool Bar and Grill or Sake which rely more on freshness of produce and quality of ingredients than flair and presentation, it's definitely better than the equivalent places there.

~5 years ago it was possible to get decent bargains on hotel rooms. Prices are now crazy obscene for the most basic of rooms.

It is great that people have a choice of food to eat when overseas.

We are all entitled to our own opinions but most of the independent guides give HK the big thumbs up over Australia. But I guess restaurant preferences can be a very personal thing.
