If the main goal of this status run is the extra baggage for a trip next year, might make sense to check the maths:

Depending on the desired extra weight you wishes to have, the destination of your trip, if you need the extra weight just one way or return, buying extra baggage could be cheaper.
On domestic, Silver gives you an extra 9kg (on a single bag), but you could byu 23kg extra bag for 100$ one way (200 return) at the airport (probably cheaper if buying online)
International, the maths could favor Silver and the status run, but really depends on the circumstances of your travel and baggage requirements.
