Glad Qantas doesn't adopt this rate!

On another note I asked them if Visa/MasterCard was exempt as it only mentions EFTPOS, I just got blank stares.

Come the Near Field Communication revolution in the next few years when we are tapping our phones rather than paying cash, will these businesses be charging a surcharge for not using cash, noting its convenience?

Thats the bit I dont understand about this whole CC surcharge nonsense. Surely in this day and age, handling cash, taking it to a bank, counting it at the end of every shift..the risk of theft etc..is more costly than electronic transactions. If anything CASH should have a surcharge..

Oh the joys of visible vs invisible costs.

Also. Problem is. Big companies have made us accustomed to "extra fees" so not little "mum and pop" shops are jumping on.

Ouch, 50c surcharge to get a coffee.

Our local haunt at uni has a simple solution: no EFTPOS option at all. Still, roaring trade and super fast (and good!) coffee.

There's a refurb'd cafe up the road which takes EFTPOS with no surcharge; can't remember the minimum though (either $5 or $10, so not quite a single cup of coffee).

On the other side of things, does anyone think that perhaps the providers of the e-merchant devices (e.g. banks) are taking advantage of the whole "move to e-payment" thing and raising the cuts they take of business takings accordingly?

10% is not too much, I've experienced 50c surharge for cc on $1 parking fee run by a local council!

My other good one when explaining mobile phone plans the other day in Coffee Analogy.

$20 a month Coffee plan, $250 Worth of Coffee**
** Coffees cost $20/cup

Same company also has a PAYG Coffee plan
$1 a month
Cheap coffee rate at $2.50/cup

I have seen 40c surcharge for EFTPOS at some newsagents.

I thought EFTPOS was supposed to be free when it was first introduced many years ago. I guess this is another of those clever marketing schemes where they suck people in and then slug them. Almost like organised crime but legal....

Absolutely disgusting and shouldn't be allowed.

I wouldn't pay it. As others have mentioned the cost of cash is higher.

Personally, I wouldn't use EFTPOS for a coffee, maybe lunch - but seems like a ripoff to me.
50 customers a day brings in $25; per 5 day week: $125. Did it *really* increase $500/month ($6000/yr) to use?

Maybe I'm getting used to the ease of using a debit card here in TH - but guess what? They don't charge and extra 10% for doing so. Sure they have a minimum at many places (between 300-500THB), but that's what cash is for! :D

Totally made me laugh with the Visa Swipe (?) that I saw being advertised last time I was back in AU, and some poor guy went to pay cash and everyone gave him a look like he was a nut - at least he wasn't getting ripped 50c every time he did though. . . . .;)

Remember though a lot of small business are running on cash economy to avoid paying GST etc. That's 10% off. That's why you don't see them surcharging us by paying cash.

True that, it also helps them "skim" on formal trace reporting for payroll, inventory, profit & loss, etc. I think Chinatown has the largest concentration of businesses that do this. :)

Saying that, the more typical types of these tend to have a "no EFTPOS at all" payment policy.

Hey Hey Hey! Watch out what you are saying!!! :!: ;)

Blame the banks. They are the one imposing the fee, I guess the coffee shop is just trying to recover costs.

Depending on your arrangement with the bank, you can get hit with a percentage (Merchant Service Fee, or MSF) or a flat fee per transaction.

When we had our shop we just built the MSF in as a cost of doing business.

exactly, the banks are suffering on the loan front so they will get you elsewhere.

As it should be! Depending on turn over/type of cash payments. Paying a staff member to Count coins and notes can be costly. I don't blame banks. I blame it on a RBA endorsed cash grab by greedy businesses.

The RBA only made it legal to surcharge credit cards, didn't they? I'm not sure you can extend that to EFTPOS.

Kept in mind I can't actually see the picture from the AFF app.
