I would love to know how they justify a 10% surcharge.

Out of interest do they have a surcharge for other credit cards?

That's a hangover from the cabcharge service charge.

GST was actually assessable on those fees levied on CC use, so in fact it was an 11% impost.

Victoria have recently legislated to a 5% max.

You sure it wasn't the Pineapple taxi? :P they like to charge those sorts of extortionate rates.

What about Qantas and Virgin charging $7 and $7.70 for domestic bookings. You purchase a $79 fare and then get hit with these CC surcharges and you are right up there with the Pineapple

So true ....................the rough end with sharp edges

As an ex major bank employee, I can tell you it is definitely illegal. I'm a little too busy right now to find the legislation, but basically a merchant is allowed to pass on the "cost", per se, of accepting the card. So in airlines' case, they can justify some level of administration in addition to the AMEX/MC/Visa fees. However, charging nothing (or say 1/2%) on MC/Visa, but then 10% on AMEX, is absolutely illegal - there is no way they could justify such an inordinate excess charge.
However, the ACCC is of course known as "the toothless tiger"... the best protest is to tell them they've just permanently lost a client over a few dollars.

Slightly OT, but on our trip to the Gold Coast a week ago I noticed that there were surcharges for using any type of credit card almost everywhere we went.

i noticed this as well and so basically always had the visa/mastercard out, some places didn't even display the surcharge for AMEX at all!
I also found that some places listed in the shop small promotion, and even had the sticker on their door didn't accept amex...

Wow - remind me not to pull out the Amex after having too many beers watching the football at the Piney next year. Fortunately sure there's a VISA in the wallet somewhere...
