This visit to Toronto is brief. It is really a staging post for the trip tomorrow to Stratford where we go into theatre overload on a binge for a few days. I do like Toronto. It feels like, and is, a big city. The other times I've been here in recent years I've stayed at the Intercontinental on Front Street. When I found prices were through the roof for some reason I decided to use points at the Hilton for this two night stay and the one the other side of the visit to Stratford.

The hotel seems like most North American Hiltons - dated. The desk clerk apologised for there being no upgrades available and then came up with a junior suite which is a slightly larger version of the basic King. The room is fine and even the standard Kings appear to be large by US big city standards. The bed is good and the shower works fine. However, the whole thing needs a refurbishment. The executive lounge, which I have access to as a HH Diamond, is again typical. It is spacious and reasonably attractive with a 32 floor city view. Last night, we went in to grab a first course before dinner. It was strange to see it only sparsely populated and not one person drinking. It has an honour bar and as they want $10.00++ for a glass of poor quality wine, it was not hard to see why no one was drinking. The food was basic (a couple of dips, a small amount of cheese and a couple of deep fried things) but fresh and tasty.

On the other hand, breakfast was really poor. Scrambled egg mix with huge lumps making it looked like something had been regurgitated, cheap orange juice, packet bread, a few pastries, rock hard melon pieces, one or two huge bowls of cereal and that was it! Continental breakfast at its most basic! We'll try the restaurant tomorrow morning though the voucher they gave us comes with an ominous warning of surcharges for a "full" breakfast.

Back to dinner last night. I'd never eaten at a Ruth's Chris Steak House and there is one attached to the hotel so we gave it a try. The prices are of course eye-watering and it seemed to be largely populated by bosses and secretaries. :) But the steaks (strip loin and rib eye) were
sensational and eased the sticker shock.

In superb weather (23C) we wandered this morning around the old town, visited the market (about our 38th on this trip) and went to a lunchtime concert in the cathedral.

The fountain is a new one in Berczy Park and is said to be a whimsy! The 27 dogs are staring up a bone at the top.

The Alaskan crab legs come in at AUD100 a kilo so I hope they were good. The man selling the ice wine gave us a sampling though we told him we weren't buying today. I like Canadians!

Our friends we meet on Celebrity cruises live in Toronto and keen for us to visit but Europe has been our focus. They live in Florida during winter. Looks wonderful and more great weather again.

I think it is a wonderful city and would be a great place to live (for 6 months of the year anyway!)

After a whistle stop in Toronto, and a home cooked meal from friends here last night, we move on to Stratford ON this morning by, dare I say it, b-s! We have 4 days of theatre overload coming up. I tend to do things a little over the top and it is 7 plays at the Stratford Festival before we head back to Toronto next Sunday night. We start this afternoon with Romeo and Juliet followed this evening by Guys and Dolls. I'm glad I slept well last night.

After Romeo and Juliet and Guys and Dolls yesterday we slept like lambs. It was a big day but both were very good, particularly Gs + Ds which was an amazing production. I can't stop singing (to myself) Luck be a Lady and I Got The Horse Right Here etc Now building up strength for another double header - Twelfth Night and The Mad Women of Chaillot. We never do things by half! A few sustaining coffees have been consumed this morning to get us through the day.

Excellent BBQ chicken at the Bruce Hotel.

Bruce Hotel Stratford ON - we ate there but are not staying. Looks very good in a town without too many good hotels.

Waiting for Guys and Dolls.

We are getting to the business end of this visit to Stratford ON. We have a play this evening (The Bakkhai) and one tomorrow afternoon (School For Scandal) before we take the b_s back to Toronto. Everything we have seen so far has been very good to excellent. Here are some more shots around Stratford. There was a dragon boat festival on the lake this afternoon. Much poutine and french fries were being consumed.

Another day ,another beer for lunch. Life is tough on the road. After 7 quality plays and a great stay in Stratford we are now back in Toronto for two nights before heading down to the Big Apple for just one more. Somewhat unexpectedly, we do have a hurricane to contend with. Jose will be off the coast Tuesday/Wednesday with tropical storm watches in force in NJ and NY. We are touching wood.IMG_6270.JPG Who would have thought..

Back in Toronto for the last time this trip with a two night stay again at the Hilton. It is a points reservation but we were upgraded to an Executive floor king. It is a well furnished sizeable room in good condition with a view over the city. It is going to be a quiet day ahead of the flight to NYC tomorrow morning, hurricanes permitting. We got in from Stratford around 8.00pm last night and ate at the Hilton restaurant, Tundra, and it was very good despite the TripAdvisor comments. The wine list is poor but the pork chop i had was excellent.

Another warm day in Toronto coming up but we started with some light mist.

On my morning constitutional around the city I came across the Mayor, who glories under the name of Jim Tory, giving a press briefing on traffic congestion! There is plenty of that.

At the dog fountain which I also walked past this morning, there is one cat among the 30 canines.

I worked out what the cat was looking at.

Ships in the night Michael ; we have been here in New York for a few days resetting our clocks.
Boarding the Whisper tomorrow but the hurricane makes for some speculation about alternatives.
My best guess atm is that we will board , sail , and seek to out run the worst of it.

tgh, I've had the warning email from AA this evening saying our booking at noon YYZ-LGA can be changed or cancelled foc . However, the flight is still listed as all the other around it and it all at this point seems to be okay. The hurricane, or rather tropical storm when it gets here, is well off shore and the government forecast is nothing to be alarmed about. However, I'm glad we have 27 hours in NYC before we get on our flight to Europe which may be a good precaution. As they say, we shall see.

I hope you get out of NYC okay, as you should and that the trip north goes well. I am sure you'll have a lovely time as it is a very good ship and currently a great crew. Do go to Miss Vicki's show if she does it. I haven't laughed so much. Raymond, who has a heart of gold, should keep you entertained! Safe and happy cruising.

sigh.. thanks for the good wishes , we are loaded and locked.. but sailing is not happening.
Captain just provided a very guarded prognosis with the next update at 9am tomorrow.

Oh. I hope it works out for you. We were looking at a NE Autumn Leaves cruise for next year - had booked - but cancelled before the Hurricanes this year as we were told that September is the riskiest but it’s also the time to see the Fall. Fingers crossed for you.

I'm very sorry to hear that tgh. Our flight YYZ-LGA was bumpy but no big deal. I must admit that walking around NYC around 4.00pm it felt like it did in Cairns when a cyclone was approaching and I commented on it. I hope you get better news in the morning. Please keep us posted.
