Our first night in London we saw "An American in Paris" at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road. It lived up to the rave reviews and I'd recommend it to anyone in or coming to London. The dancing, staging and singing were sensational. I think it will have a long run. The Champagne Bar was good too.

The Tate Modern is just around the corner from the Hilton Bankside. This is what 1.3 million pounds will get you there :)

We still have a number of days to go at the Hilton London Bankside but I've concluded it is the best Hilton I've stayed in. It is not a Conrad but I put it ahead of the Conrad St James where we've stayed a couple of times. It's location is good being 5 minutes from Southwark Tube station although it means that if where you want to go is not on the Jubilee line you are going to need to change. This is a small inconvenience.

Service and facilities throughout the hotel are top notch - from front desk to housekeeping, bar, restaurant, executive lounge, pool and gym. Food and service in the restaurant are excellent for breakfast and the one evening meal we have had there. Breakfast and evening drinks in the lounge are very good. We haven't been here for the afternoon tea.

We booked a King room and tat is what we got. I have no qualms with that given it is a 10 night stay. The room is spacious, well finished and comfortable. The bed and shower are excellent. The only negative is the view - a brick wall but I can live with that. Very good hotel.

The following are pictures of the executive lounge and the evening spread tonight.

A wet day in London so we went to Cambridge - also a wet day but who is shocked! 16 pounds day return on the train so who is complaining? In my view Kings College chapel is the best building in England. It is spine-tingling. I have been many times including to a Christmas Eve lessons and carols service in 1974 when you didn't have to pay the 9 pounds admission! We went to the college today, wandered about the town with all the other tourists and also went to the Fitzwilliam museum. All up, a good day.

When in England and there is a Test Match in prospect, it is the obvious thing to do. Well, for me it is! The 3rd Test between England and South Africa started today at The Oval, or The Kia Oval as it now is. I booked tickets months ago for the first day. The partner is not in to cricket so I had to limit myself to one day in the interests of domestic bliss.

Last week the forecast looked excellent but it has deteriorated with each passing day until this morning it was predicted as some sunshine, mainly cloudy and the chance of showers and heavy rain. It read a bit like a normal day in Melbourne .:) Indeed that is what we got.

Some observations on the cricket at The Oval compared with Australia.

Where are the women and children? Hardly any here comparatively.
Ticket prices are similar. Very high here and in Australia.
Food and beer are very pricey.
As much is consumed here as is consumed in Australia.
We ought to thank our lucky stars in Australia that the facilities are so much better and more comfortable - seating, toilets, food choices, replay screens, entertainment, and crowding. With a full house of 25,000 there was no room to move.

Despite all that it was a good experience and I'm glad I went.

At the end of rain interrupted Day 1 the situation is pretty much even with maybe the slightest of edges to England.

Off we go - cloudy but bright.

Ominous -out come the covers.

Hmm - a touch of heavy mist!

But there is always the Yorkshire Tea Band to entertain us.

Slightly OT but I hate the way traditional oval names are changed to that of the most recent sponsor.
Enjoy the cricket!

An interesting art work outside Canada House in Trafalgar Square. It is on the Fourth Plinth which displays contemporary artworks on a temporary basis. They each seem to last about 2 years. This one is called "Really Good" and is meant to convey positivity. Unsurprisingly, it has a slang name.

Is London still insanely busy? We were there last Monday and it was dreadful. Or was it Saturday. Yes. Saturday. A week ago.

Wow, what a great TA so far, just loving it, will be along for the remainder of the journey....thanks V

In a week so far in London we have seen "An American in Paris", "Angels in America Part 1" and "The Tempest" at the Barbican. The theatre binge continued with a day trip to Stratford Upon Avon to see "Antony and Cleopatra". All have been truly memorable including A and C not least for the performance by Lisette Simon as Cleopatra. There are many great actors about and she is one of them.

Stratford was difficult to get to by public transport at least for us from Bankside. Two tube and two mainline trains, 2.5 hours each way, and lots of time spent standing in steady rain waiting for connections. But it was all worthwhile in the end and the rain held off largely while we were in Stratford. One word of advice - don't waste your money eating in the restaurant at the theatre. It was expensive and poor quality food and service. I should have checked.

And, hey presto, there he was 15 minutes later as the soothsayer in the opening scene!

We have just checked in at LHR for our BA flight to Copenhagen this afternoon. It was all quite painless really. Heathrow Express to lounge in 25 minutes. Unfortunately the flight is delayed a little. The worst bit was having to turn right rather than left at the top of the escalators now that LT Gold has kicked in. As the OH said: "Oh, the ignominy!" :)

But good things lie ahead over the next 10 days..

Watch out for those pesky cyclists in Copenhagen. Their normal method is to drive in pelatons. All the time. Take a walk on the wild side through Christiania. Nyhaven. Canal boat. Hopefully sunny for you too.
