Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Any update on release date of the P (?) series passport?

R series? My current passport, issued in 2014, was an early P series.

Had managed to get a bit worried about supposed massive backlogs and delays for renewing passports, so organised a new one just under two months before expiry. Felt like my wings had been clipped when the the post office cut off the MRZ and corners of my passport to cancel it. They said it would take six weeks.

Exactly one week later, received the new passport in the mail.

Looks like I made a mistake - believing Youtube videos ranked 1 and 3. So I should be in for streamlined. However this does not take back the so called digital identity shambles going on, and the fact many govt agencies have your info. I think the Cwth did a deal with the states, otherwise the very steep prices charged for birth certificate extracts would no longer be needed, ever. At the ATO they used to harp on about 'Easier, Cheaper, more personalised' , before 'not doing things properly' became the new mantra.

Well, at least in this case for streamlined renewal you merely need to fill out the online form and go to an interview with two photos and your current/recent passport.

If you qualify, then to lodge an application you only need your application checklist or form, two passport photos and your most recent passport.

Happy New Year to all AFF members. Not so happy is the increase in passport charges. A 10 yr document, really a 9.5yr doc., will now set you back $308.
For many of us this has really been an 8yr document. Still waiting for the 20% discount offer.

We applied for new passports last Thursday as our August trip will be well within the 6 months until expiry. Quoted 6-8 weeks for delivery but hope it is closer to the 6week mark as we are off to SIN 7 weeks and 6 days after our application. Or we could pay an extra $200+ for a quick turn around.

Yikes that is a long wait, I did my last passport renewal online in 2019 and it arrived just over a week (and no i didnt pay to expedite the process).

Just wanted make a small point that sometimes you may need a passport domestically. For example to show an employer that you have the right to work in Australia and you may need it to identify youself to open bank accounts. I think in Austrac's rules you can only use a passport for upto 1 year after it expires for identification purposes.

I applied for a new passport on Friday 25th February. A non-urgent application - allow up to six weeks. The passport was issued on Thursday 3rd March (so less than 1 week later) and delivered by registered post on Monday 7th March.

Just looked this up as a matter of curiosity and it's 2 years.

The documentation must be current – although passports can be used if they are no more than two years past their expiry date.

I think it is 2 years after expired. Also, driver's license, medicare, and 1-2 bills/bank statements should suffice for ID purposes.

We renewed my partners passport two weeks ago. We were advised 6 to 8 weeks. But received his passport 8 days after submitting. Just for a point of reference.

Just looked this up as a matter of curiosity and it's 2 years.

I think it is 2 years after expired. Also, driver's license, medicare, and 1-2 bills/bank statements should suffice for ID purposes.

More recently it was three years, bit has actually changed.

Any Australian Passport issued since 2006 can be used for renewal, expired or not.

That is, if your expired passport was issued on or after 2006, it can be used as proof of identity for passport renewal, irrespective of how long it has been expired.

It was three years, but as I post currently it can effectively be up to 6 years (Adult).
