Passport Renewal / Application - Time Taken?

Who has received a passport renewal notice recently? I did today. My initial reaction is it is a bit cheeky. We have not been allowed to travel, yes I know essential services travelers can, for 12 months now, and we know we cannot fly before 21 June 2021. I know it pays to be prepared but as I was reading the email I was waiting for the offer "Renew before your passport expires to receive a discount".

We could be another 12 months away from travel with the government admitting the vaccine rollout could run into 2022.

Who is allowing their passport to go fallow whilst they wait for confirmation of dates for commencement of international travel?
Surely everyone should get a free 2 years? Sell a product, that cant be used for 2 years (at the discretion of the seller) and off no refund??? Consumer protection? If thats ok i have a nice house available for rent, you dont actually get to live in the house but ill collect the rent :)

We recently renewed our kids passports - was hoping to get them to a week at the snow in NZ before the current COVID outbreak shut that idea down - and one was turned around in 2 days, the other in 3.

Application submitted at the post office on a Tuesday afternoon. Notified the first was ready for collection on Thursday morning and the second on Friday morning. (Elected to pickup in person because, ironically, the lady at the post office said that can shave a couple of days off the turnaround and at the time we were looking to leave in about 2 weeks.)

I was amazed. I've had renewals turned around in ~1 week before (eg: applied Monday, received following Tuesday), but never in a couple of days.

Is it likely that data like your Covid vax status could end up being linked to your passport. I think I read a QR code could be added to your passport doc and this could simply be scanned by any border authority to confirm your vax status online?

Would be a pity to be issued with a 10yr doc that wasn't current technology. I might hold off a bit longer.

Lodged my renewal (previously expired for 10months) today, very easy process.
They say 3 weeks, let's see how long it takes.

Passport has arrived today.

Right on 14 days between docs & photo at Post Office to delivery of new passport at my door step.
Date of Issue was 5 days ago, so Gold Standard service.

Very good I must say.

Now that I've cancelled my Fiji trip, I didn't really need to get new PP so soon, oh well.

Sounds like an organisation Qantas could learn from…

Australian Passport cost through the roof (And a major greenhouse gas contributor).
Australian born resident wants to renew her passport in Portland USA. Cannot be done remotely, must be done IN PERSON. LAX appointment waiting time close to 3 months. So flew to SFO -lucky cancellation. Sorry - we cant give your your passport - it must to sent to an address in Australia.
So it wings its way to a friend, more money and time to post it back(never mind risk of lost in mail).
It looks like the passport office never heard of Covid, and enjoys rubbing salt in to ex WA and QLD residents.

Actually, the Minister responsible should fix this. It assumes the Passport Offices trove of identification sharing, including drivers license photos are available remotely.

I applied for my kids first passport back in October, the same time as I did my own. I received mine in less than 2 weeks but I'm still waiting for my son's, nearly 8 weeks later.

We're meant to fly out to London in 3 weeks times and I'm starting to get anxious about it. The Passport Office seems to no longer be taking calls so I'm not sure how to check up on things. Anyone in the same boat or got any addice?

Thanks

My passport expiring soon. I checked the passport online version, and discovered it (for a simple renew) needed paper foundation ID documents all over again, and re-keying of totally redundant information they already have. The Passports office already has mine/everybodys birth certificate online. I forget how many millions have been spent of 'Digital Identity' - but I can say it is a 100% fail as implemented now. I suspect they have a database of fresh drivers license photos, and those with govt clearances. It should be mail in old passport , with $301 and say everything else unchanged. repeat. Zero streamling. There is no speed advange over paper form Vs Online Form, so an 'F' for DFAT, who I remember tried to sell off/privatize to mates citizenship plus plus. Now reminded of the sky high rent for a building in Barton, my voting intention has hardened.

There is no reason passport renewal can't be as simple as it is with a UK passport. However, I am reminded of the fact that countries with roundabouts generally have a rule "give way to traffic on the right/left" as the case may be. Simple. Here it is give way to traffic already on the roundabout. Totally meaningless, but uniquely Australian. Don't hold your breath for a simple solution to a simple problem.

But the renewal is outside two or three years or whatever the cut-off is these days? Renewals inside that time are straightforward with no additional paperwork other than a new photo.

But didn't they say the passport was expiring "soon"?

Hmmm. Sorry - missed that bit! Seems strange. I renewed my passport a couple months ago and no paperwork was required.

The criteria for streamlined renewal are:

Do I qualify for streamlined renewal?

You need to be an adult and able to show us your most recent Australian passport. It has to be a passport that:

  • was issued when you were aged 16 or older, and
  • had a validity, when it was issued, of more than two years, and
  • was issued in your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender, and
  • is still current, or expired less than three years ago, and
  • hasn't been reported lost or stolen, or been cancelled for any other reason.

If a person dun qualify for streamlined then need supporting docs:

What if I don’t qualify for streamlined renewal?

If you don’t qualify for streamlined renewal, then you’ll need to nominate a referee and show us original supporting documents that prove your citizenship and identity.

That could be it....

Looks like I made a mistake - believing Youtube videos ranked 1 and 3. So I should be in for streamlined. However this does not take back the so called digital identity shambles going on, and the fact many govt agencies have your info. I think the Cwth did a deal with the states, otherwise the very steep prices charged for birth certificate extracts would no longer be needed, ever. At the ATO they used to harp on about 'Easier, Cheaper, more personalised' , before 'not doing things properly' became the new mantra.
