After a NAN run with double SC's and one return run to CBR I've now found myself 130 short in qualifying for gold for the first time.

Im located in MEL and would prefer to spend a day either Sat or Sun to try and reach Gold. I'm thinking a JASA and do points/cash.

Played with MEL-BNE via SYD and straight back to MEL which would get me over the line, not sure if that's the best deal out there.

Look at CBR SYD HBA SYD CBR, will do it.

look at ADL BNE TSV BNE ADL

plus positioning flights.

OR LAN SYS AKL SYD.

So you are busy flying so that you will achieve Gold FF status so that you will be able to do what exactly? Sell your bag-tags on FLeABay to get some of your money back?

Sorry to sound harsh but if your normal travel patterns leave yourself 250SC short of Gold then it will be far cheaper to purchase QC membership and slum it occasionally.

Smack, the OP wants to look at JASA's, not break out the wallet entirely. Although QF may offer him a good rate for QC due to previous status?

250sc is a little different to 130sc.

I already have QC membership, in fact the costs of it is significantly cheaper due to a corporate membership and has come quite handy.

Anyway I'm moving up to CBR in July and will be commuting to MEL and BNE fairly often so I see the benefit of seat selection, free QC and other SG perks quite beneficial.
Thanks for the input!

It surprises me sometimes the negativity thrown around when all someone wants to do is attain status they’ve never had before. Never mind their reasons, there’s no need to act like this…

That being said, depending on how long the OP has to the end of their year, there’s no rush in going over Gold unless they’re planning to then head for Platinum, as it’s really all just wasted SC’s after that ;)

Albeit, with lounge access of course.

How would it be far cheaper to purchase QC membership and how is it now comparable? The OP can achieve what they want for $250 + 16K of points, which is only 10K after the earn on the JASA and positioning flights. Throw in the 25% points bonus for SG for a year on the longer flights and I am pretty sure you would earn back that 10K in the year, so the net cost is $250 and a day of your time.

Does not sound like its far cheaper at all, and the OP would get the extra benefits including priority check in, which is a big difference for me. The last time I saw a cheaper QP membership than $250 was in 1997, ironically I still have 6 months of that years membership left on hold!

Aside from that, getting to CBR and doing HBA and back via SYD should do the trick.

250sc is a little different to 130sc.

According to your first post you were 130SC short after completing two status runs to Fiji and Canberra. Assuming you travelled from Melbourne and (at worst) were in discount economy then the Fiji "run" would have netted you 100SC (normally 50 but you claimed this was a double-status run) and the Canberra run would have been worth 20SC.

So before you started your status runs (if these were the only two) you were 250SC short of Gold. OK?

I already have QC membership, in fact the costs of it is significantly cheaper due to a corporate membership and has come quite handy.

You didn't initially mention your discount QC membership, but that makes it even more puzzling that you would spend quite so much trying to attain Gold status.

Seat selection will be marginally better going from QC+PS to SG, but you ain't going to be no WP and in my experience you can get good seats on your current status - it just takes a bit more vigilance.

Free QC will save you what - $200 before tax and around $100 after? What did the run to Fiji cost you? Are you going to get any tax back on that one?

Other SG perks have improved (relatively) after Qantas "enhanced" QC benefits to remove some check-in options. If you travel mostly carry-on and do NGCI there is little difference, but there could be times where Gold status will help, granted.

Sorry for the input and I know that on AFF you should be amongst friends, but I despair that so many people on this forum think that status is a goal rather than an outcome.

Still even in the title it says 130SC, not hard to work out that it's not 250.

Something so good can only last so long, the move up to CBR is a change in employer so I won't be eligible for the heavily discounted QC rate once my membership is up for renewal this year.

A very good chance I spent a week on holiday over there. In fact I did.

That's no problem! We all have different goals and some like to achieve status because they can and enjoy the benefits that comes with it no matter what their travel plans are.

I would certainly go for the 130SC and Gold.
A JASA Canberra to Hobart, via Sydney will earn you 100SC.
Another JASA MEL/CBR or HBA/MEL will earn you 40.
Combine that with a Red E Deal to leave or get back to Melbourne and you have 150SC.
That involves 4 flights and can be done in one day. :)

Obviously you are getting a job as a spin doctor, so let me be very clear about my reasoning. The fact that you included the figure 130 in your title told half the story. The fact that you had already done at least 120SC in "runs" (your term - not mine) led me to add those in to a figure that represents the total number of SC you needed in "runs" to achieve Gold status. That's not hard to work out, is it?

You are now claiming that the Fiji "run" was in fact a holiday. Did you originally use the word "run" to raise your status (pun intended) with the AFF crowd or was it an unintended mistake? I don't mind which but it is very hard for me make comments about your story if you are going to change it to justify yourself.

Good luck to you in your new role - I suspect you will be very good at it.

Are you having a bad day mate?

The OP simply asked whether he was thinking along the lines of the best deal out there to get 130SC's from melbourne.

You've gone off topic by questioning his need for Gold, got annoyed that someone wants to spend their time and money doing something thats completely their prerogative. And because he didn't disclose every piece of information that you thought was relative, you've tried to cut him down.

This post may be deleted, and i'm sorry to the OP that this is off-topic, but i think this is really not called for.

I'm still a little confused at the calculations you've come up with. Because you're assuming I only did 120SC's with a NAN and CBR run, where does 250sc come from? If you read my original post, it'll mention that i'm "130sc short from qualifying for gold for the first time"
Just want to get on the same page you're on.

Just to clarify, I earned 550SC's from going to NAN. How? Well thanks to members here on AFF and a double status credit promo.

I'm sure I'm not the first person on AFF to ever complete this milestone of doing a status run and holiday at the same time. What was originally going to be a quick status run to NAN, decided that why not use that opportunity to take a holiday at the same time! My mistake and apologise in confusing you, should have explained myself better.

Good luck to you in your new role - I suspect you will be very good at it.

Thanks! I hope I do well in my new role too!

Didn't think of a CBR to HBA via SYD, works out all doable in a day too after playing around with a few dates. Even better is that I need to head to CBR for a weekend, might as well make the most of it and knock that one off.
Thanks!

Thanks!

They can be hard to find. Often have to overnight, but HBA can be a good town to spend a sat night.

Return HBA - MEL and you will have enough points. Keeps the costs down

QFF Gold is not comparable to QC membership IMO.

I have very recently had both!

Its harder on the weekend owing the lower number of jets on the CBR leg, but also very much doable during the week in one day with routing to get the 130SC.

Not the connection into HBA is actually the aircraft that goes to SYD

The poster is entitled to disagree with my reasoning - but I take exception to him distorting the truth.

It now appears that when I said he had obtained at least 100SC from his status run slash holiday to Fiji I was very conservative - he now admits that due to routings or class of travel (or both) he gained 550SC!

So it seems the entire 700SC he requires to obtain Gold status will be made up of status runs. This (from my point of view) is insane, but since we are inside the asylum I guess that figures!

Don't worry - I'm leaving now for some fresh air outside and will be in a much better mood for it.
