Got this offer today. Not sure where I sit with my Amex MR points...how do i know whether or not I get 20%? My MR account is linked to the platinum charge card.

Plat charge means Ascent Premium

However, when in your MR have a look towards the top right of the page, and it will say in small print Ascent Premium

Velocity did the same 15% enhancement for transfers this time last year,

In the prior two years it was 20% ( or maybe evn 25% enhancement if I recall)

Either way an extra 15% is the difference in a class of travell to Europe on Etihad.

So just moved a heap of points from Westpac and are now off to Milan in (F to AUH, then J to MXP) from SYD next July

Thanks Velocity, means we get the free cheaufer thrown in as well!

With all the promotions and discounting across the year I've never paid 'full price' for a Velocity redemption! Great for customers but they are training people to 'shop on special' which does devalue the program and brand.

Not online from what I can see. The search keeps returning with zero flights.

The points may end up being expensive as well for these redemptions.

I usually spend points on SQ Krisflyer program but thought I would check to compare flying with Virgin or partners. I nearly fell off my chair when I did some dummy bookings to find the points required for a London or Paris J return on Virgin are around 50%-100% more than the same destinations with SQ.

On the points charged for a J seat even taking into account the 15% or 20% bonus offer I would be better off sticking with SQ where a London, Paris or Amsterdam J return runs to around 160,000 points + around $800 for taxes and surcharges. Or am I missing something?

I have done the exercise on whether it is worth transferring the points or not. If someone could check my calcs here.

I have assumed a $100 Myer gift voucher is the reward in this example for 16950 from Altitude or 13500 with Velocity, and only using Altitude as the originating supplier of the points.

If my altitude account has 176978 points, and I transfer them to Velocity I get 88,250 Velocity points + bonus of 13237 = 101487 Velocity points.

If I use my 176978 altitude points with Altitude to by the $100 myer gift cards I will get 10.44 Myer cards.
If I use my newly acquired balance of 101487 Velocity points, I will only be able to get 7.51 $100 Myer cards.

Now whether redeeming for gift cards is a good use of points or not is another argument.

Can others confirm if my thinking is correct here, that in this example I am best to leave my points where they are if my intention is to buy myer gift cards?

I guess the same exercise can be applied to flights etc, but I wonder how many people (if my math is correct), don't consider this and end up costing themselves?

Hmnn with Amex Ascent you get 1:1 points so that's a lot more attractive. But usually the 'cash' type options are the poorest $1 to point ratio. I think there's not much of a standard rule, it seems different programs assign different ratios to different reward types, you've gotta take it on a case by case basis.

Yes... If the conversion was 1:1 with altitude I would certainly jump all over it. As I mentioned, using the points for gift card may not be the best way to burn the points, but it is a consistant item that I could use to generate the comparison.

....sent from the place closest to the airport I just arrived at.
