Hello AFF community!

Can you please give me some advice on obtaining 160 SCs before the end of the year for the lowest cost.

I've got 200,000 QPs but 160SC short of Gold :(

Domestic trips would be preferred if possible.

Can anyone help me out with my unfortunate situation?

It would be useful to know where you are based and how much you are prepared to spend. Using your points will not be an option since you won't earn SCs.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

Hello

I am based in Sydney and looking to spend up to $1000 possibly more.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

I have moved your post to a new thread... luckily from SYD you have plenty of options and if you have until December 31 that is a lot of time to work with.

I'd start by looking at any future trips taking an indirect routing instead of direct.

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

You could buy a Qantas Club membership for less than $1000; unless you've got a bit of Y-class overseas oneworld travel coming up in the next year is Gold really worth it for you?

Re: Best Status Run Options - A quick overview!

SYD-MEL-OOL aft Oct 25th in J? around $1350 r/t would get 160 SC.

or possibly CBR-xSYD/xMEL-OOL but not sure of the cost of that.

maybe SYD-BNE-DRW in flex Y may do the trick also.

Is SYD-AKL still on sale in J? That would net you 160 SCs for a return trip.

Sadly that one just finished (there may be more) plus OP said domestic preferred (though AKL is fairly much domestic these days :) )

the $549 one way price was sure tasty

If it's finished, they'll be sure to be on in the near future.
$750AUD will get you into the EK F A380 cabin ex-AKL. There's 120SCs and then you can easily get 40SCs via QF or even LAN (J on a LA number nets 40SCs and tickets can be found for the mid 500s on the SYD to AKL leg.

*BTW I understand that you'd prefer domestic, but NZ is essentially domestic.

OP, the F lounge in SYD is the one I would aim for.
Aud$1400 give or take can get you a F seat and you get SC on the EK metal but QF flight numbered flight, and comping back you can go via BNE in whY, or fullY, then on back to
SYD. All up, it will cost you Aud$2000, give or take, but you can get 160 SC, 120 in F SYD - AKL, AKL - BNE - SYD in whY or fullY should make up to 160.
Can do a dummy booking on QF website if you want.
QF SG gives access to the SYD QFint J lounge, but not the F lounge.
I am aiming for an F lounge visit some time next year, as an QF SG, unless I get an invite, I have to access to the F lounge unless I fly F, which I will do, SYD - CHC.

While the FLounge is nice, the OP said that they want to earn 160 SCs as cheaply as possible. There have been numerous suggestions to earn the 160 SCs for much less than $2,000.

FWIW another popular run is MEL-SYD-OOL and return in Flex Y. This usually costs around $500 (perhaps slightly more now) for 80 SCs. Do this twice and you have 160.

Thanks very much guys! You've been a massive help! I think return Auckland will be my best option and also the most enjoyable! Thanks a lot!

In J or F? :)

There will definitely be an EF/QK F sale before the end of the year, and probably a QF J sale ex-SYD too.

I'm sorry if this is a really dumb question from a Newbie.............

Why are you willing to spend a $1,000 just to get Gold membership? Is it for lounge access, extra luggage, getting on the plane 2 minutes quicker?

Whilst I've had Gold for a few years,I'm not sure I would actually 'pay' to get it.

In fact in some Australian ports, I don't use the lounge but prefer the public areas. Let's just say it's quieter :)

Apologies if this was a really really dumb question! As I said, I'm new here and still working out what this is all about.

(10 or 15 years ago Gold was probably worth something. Free on departure upgrades etc.)

Have never got a freebie upgrade as a Gold member. Got one once when I was Platinum for a while I think.

I'll go in search of threads that describe the benefits of Status :-)

It can depend on what your plans are for the following year. Maybe there are some international flights in the offing ? If so Gold is a handy option (WP is better)
I did s status run to retain WP this year myself. Even though I don't have "much" travel planned, potential business trip to the U.S. Is a possibility. So it could be handy to have status.

QF SG is good that you can use Premium Boarding Lane domestically in Aust.
Occassionally empty seat next to you in Y sometimes.
Drives the punters mad.
Lounge access is good too.

I think that many here forget that delectable but intangible aspect of chasing status. For many many FF enthusiasts the cost is secondary to the goal - even if the mathematics (or any other sound logic) does not add up :)

Help the man get Gold!!!!! :)

I must admit I have been grappling with whether to try for the needed 80SC to make Gold this year. 4months to go, but no travel expected at this stage, all done for the year. Would be nice to get over the line, but don't really see any major benefit now that I have shifted most of my international travel away from QF. Also most domestic travel in J on pts, so no real benefits from lounge access. As Robolb says, could cost a lot just to get Gold, could cost more than QP. Undecided....

OATEK isn't that delectable morsel of the QF SYD F lounge titbit just enough to tempt you to fly SYD - AKL/SYD - CHC in F and then back in whY?
If you have done the SYD F lounge, then I take the above back, but if not, SYD - AKL/SYD - CHC while $$$ will elicit a visit to the F lounge.
I know I would aim it just for it once.
Though, have to say, when my this one more year of SG ends, I will go back down to QF PS, and travel less often, but more opulently that one return trip each year (F).

You are willing to pay ~$600 more to fly a ~3 hour sector in First after a visit to First lounge?
