To bring this back OT. If you don't need that many SC, it could be done one way back to Aus. cheapest, using points or a LCC to get there in the first place. Certainly adds another place to go instead of AKL and in my view, better value? <AU$500 for NAN-BNE netting 180SC.

What are the best one way to Australia fares around, in Y, Y or otherwise? Any specific deals to be had here? Most of the (albeit brief) online research I did indicated that a one way seems to be about 75% of the fare of a return, which didn't seem worth it to me but maybe I am missing some specific city/class combos that are an especially good deal.

Generally the pacific island routes are one-way fares only I believe, so any return ticket is merely double the one-way fare cost.

What I was referring to was on the QF Fiji site you can easily book NAN-BNE (with the extra 1 or 2 domestic flights) for FJ$865 which comes out just under AU$500 - that's better than the LA AKL-SYD run. $500 for 180SC if I calculate correctly.

Getting there in the first place cheap could involve points burn, otherwise pick up a FJ issued Y ticket (website promoting SYD-NAN at $199). JQ & DJ are no cheaper (actually more it appears) and no QFF points. I think I've seen the argument before, but forget if FJ Y may gain full Y SC as opposed to that QF codeshare having discount Y (half SC) earning.

Also notable is unlike the LAN option that there seems to be good availability including at short notice, where as LA800/801 do seem to have the I fare bucket availability disappear intermittently.

Do the FJ fares require 7 days notice for a paper ticket, last time I booked the codeshare online with QF there was a minimum 7 day wait so they could issue paper tickets?
