I was a regular on the 1950 BNE to Perth on Sunday nights. The scheduling worked as I could get a full day with the family and be in Perth for time to start work on Monday am.

I just tried to book for this Sunday and it appears (confirmed by P1 desk) that the flight has been cut back to weekdays. There is now a Jetstar at 2015 instead.
This seems contrary to the position that QF are adding extra seats to the transcontinental routes.

I will now fly Virgin instead.

They did the same to the last MEL-PER flight a few weeks ago

Poor.

Another high value client delivered to DJ - well done QF!

QF don't care, the future is JQ and that's all that needs to be said!

I know it’s pointless arguing, but it isn’t. If they close up their whole premium business on QF and suggest everyone fly JQ they might make a profit, but their competitors would make a better profit with the premium market.

On this route perhaps it’s not making money and so it’s understandable why they’d cut it, after all it doesn’t matter how important one P1 is, if the flight is operated at a loss just for him he’s not that worth it (no offence Canny man).

Is it possible to fly to SYD and across?

I would expect that with the resources boom in WA and increasing traffic between QLD and WA that the market would be growing - not shrinking. I haven't flown it but I assume that weekdays would be mostly B763/A330 services and probably weekend B738 services. Perhaps Canny Man would fill us in. It is an increasing trend with QF lately (along with their attempts at reducing QC opening hours) that QF seems to think that business and demand is a 9-5pm Mon to Fri thing. Unfortunately for QF - their customers and competitors are working in a more flexible modern working world.

Is it possible to fly to SYD and across?

Thats what I thought at first but why should the OP adjust their work/life schedule and possible onwards connections when they could simply fly DJ direct to PER around the same time instead? Flying through SYD also increases the cost and possibility of missed connections that may not be acceptable to the OP.

QF have better access to yield/profit figures than me, however, this flight was always pretty full and it was popular with more people from my firm than just me.

I have now booked DJ for the return in J, it operates 25mins later than the missing 1950 flight. The QF alternative leaves at 3pm via Sydney at 1625 and involves an extra 2hrs journy time.

It'll be my first time in DJ business....perhaps I'll like it?

Well explain to me how JQ is not the future direction of QF, just saying it's pointless arguing doesn't really explain much :p I am not baiting/fishing, but I am curious to your thoughts here.

1. So where does the future of QF International lay ? More deferred A380's so they can buy the A320's for Jetstar......
2. Qantas domestic, where are the orders for new 738's they are still flying 734's and will be for quite a while
3. Why does QF continue to reduce routes and move them to JQ ?

I assume this flight was normally a 738? Now being an A320 (at the very least) that's an 5% increase in seating... Domestic growth yes ?

Will be interested to hear what you think of DJ Canny Man. Maybe try the later JQ flight to compare the joys of a trancon JQ A320? Don't forget that when daylight savings comes back in next summer in NSW that DST can possibly screw up your SYD connection times if you did proceed to using QF via SYD... I assume that connecting through ADL would not be possible on Sun nights?

Well of course, we assume that QF have done the maths on the flight, and decided that JQ is a better fit for whatever reason....

However, looking forward into June onwards it seems the flight is still there & the JQ flight.....

Maybe just a short term cancellation of the flight ?

Call the P1 desk again, or check yourself

But yes try Virgin and let us know what you think :)

Perhaps Canny Man can wait until JQ give QF mainline their A330's back? And then enjoy the 2-3-2 J seating on QF A330's? A JQ product at QF J prices?

How selective people can be. Cutting routes is not something that is the sole domain of QF domestically.
It has been well documented when DJ/VA have moved out of routes.

FWIW this does not seem to be a permanent cut, as I can find QF767 in July.

I used to travel on QF767 on a very regular basis but the on time performance of this flight was dismal (I arrived in PER at 0500 Monday morning on one occasion). I therefore switched my Sunday flights to QF597 at 1500 which has been far better for on time operation.

I have noticed QF have been cancelling the Sunday QF767 service on a regular basis over the past year or so (or changing from a 763 to a 738). This then makes getting onto QF597 very difficult (at any price). As JQ have a flight at about the same time as QF767, I think this is a case where QF are just giving customers to JQ and telling their customers just to accept it.

If DJ would operate DJ468 on a Sunday (at 1730), I could be tempted to move my flights to DJ as this is the sweet spot for Sunday afternoon flights (not too early to leave BNE and not too late to arrive into PER).

How full is the Sunday flight from BNE to PER.

I have never done that flight on a Sun but I have done it on a Week night and it was pretty full when i did it.

On average, QF597 is over 80% full when I catch it on a Sunday and can regularly sell out. QF767 is normally a bit easier to get onto due to its arrival into PER at 2300+.

There will not be a future for Qantas if they believe JQ is their future.

By 'premium business' you are are not referring to business class market only are you?

I travel economy and will not travel JQ in this lifetime....

I must agree, JQ is not an option. JQ is a marked level below Virgin and seems to be more intested in supporting the Business Client. What Qantas need to also understand is the FF who travel QF for business travel QF for International Business and Pleasure. I must start to question your short term strategy impacting long term. Perhaps I should also off load those Qantas shares while they are still worth something (Besides only brand value is left on them)/

I refuse to fly JQ as do a lot of West Aussies. For instance, prefer Garuda to Bali. JQ does not exist intra state in WA. Every time JQ replace QF I jump ship to another premium airline. Everyone I know does the same. Virgin now give me that choice with their Premium business. I wonder how much money Qantas would save if it had one branding like Virgin but maintained a premium service up the front of the plane...

I'm sure when QF get their JQ A330's back they will get new seating with AVOD throughout and 2-2-2 J. Thy would have learnt their lesson from the EBO/P fiasco.
