Helping a friend book a trip, and the go PER-SIN-KUL on one Sq ticket, in J.

They already have a short protected transit in SIN of only 50min and they have gone and booked air Asia for 1h20 after landing in KUL.

They have a 5yo and checked luggage. I’ve convinced them to book a backup ticket later but they seem to still think it will be fine.

I’d love the hive’s thoughts. From memory it can take 20 min just to get to immigration.

The friend sounds like a bit of a newbie to transiting/ connecting. Remember that you can lead a horse to water, but ……

Believe SQ is back to the satellite terminal (even if they don't have a lounge out there these days).. so at the moment that's a bus ride (train maybe reopens soon).
Then immigration. Think kids can now do MDAC as well online so maybe can use automated gates?

Then collect luggage.. down to the train station.. buy tickets.. wait for next train

And even if they have checked in online, pretty sure AirAsia bag drop closes 1hr before takeoff time.

Impossible with checked luggage.

Air Asia domestic bag drop and check in closes 1hr before flight at KLIA T2. It would be physically impossible to get from T1 to T2 in 15mins from gate landing even if everything lined up.

A realistic transfer time to even get to T2 check in area would be 1hr between people needing to go to toilets, waiting for bags, immigration, train schedules etc.

Edit: I hope they weren't planning on the free shuttle bus to save a couple of $. That alone would take 15 mins or so in journey time.

@Cynicor - Given the information provided, if the flight from SIN arrives on schedule, they will still not make bag drop in time.

To add to what others have indicated, the time taken just to get to check in/bag drop from the KLIA2 Espress station when with bags and a 5YO in tow would be at least 10 minutes.

Best case scenario here is the SQ aircraft parks at the main terminal at a gate near the terminal spine on time and no queues. With that, if everything goes right:
  • 5 minutes to reach immigration
  • 3 minutes for MDAC e-gate based processing*
  • 5 minutes to wait for baggage
  • 5 minutes to head down to Espress Station (Tickets already purchase via app)
  • 2 minutes to wait for next train to KLIA2.
  • 5 minutes for train trip
  • 10 minutes on foot to Air Asia bag drop ...
... only to find bag drop had closed ¼ hour beforehand ... and that is the best case ...

* All PAX must be at least 120cm in height to use an e-gate. That'd be a tall 5YO.

And that wait for the train could be up to 25min.
Just because how the express/ transit timetable works you get two KLIA-KLIA2 trains in quick succession, then nothing.

And I'd forgotten about the long walk through the KLIA2 shopping mall..
