2 weeks relaxing in Asia - suggestions?

Wow. The Sofitel Legend Metropole looks stunning. Incredible reviews too.

Unfortunately, I have to book executive lounge access rooms (I just missed out on Platinum), so the club room tariff is double there compared to Grand Mercure Hanoi.

Next time!
We stayed at the Grand Mercue Hanoi… it was… ‘ok’. The Metropolemis an institution and we went there for lunch… definitely a case of stay ‘envy’! And the location is perfect too. If you can forego the club access, you’ll find plenty of places to eat and drink out and about in Hanoi.

Oh, that's surpising. People in the FB Accor+ group seem to rave about the Grand Mercure Hanoi, particularly the lounge.

OK, I'm seriously considering changing that to Metropole. It's only an extra $100 for the base room. I can live without lounge access!

Oops! That’s ’cause we stayed at the Pullman! I was thinking … ‘geez the mercury didn’t look that good when we stayed!’

Because we didn’t!

The Pullman was decidedly ‘so so’. The Mercury looks great! However, for all the things ‘to do’ I think the Metropole is ed in the old city centre.

Day trips to Hoi An should suffice if you make two or three. Walking around the old town isn't overly exhaustive. Do make an effort though to make one an evening session and try to catch the lantern displays on the river. There's also night markets and no shortage of good inexpensive dining.

This TR is a few years old now, but may be of some value : Doing my dong on banh mi? Pho sure!
Just read your TR @GarrettM - a ripper!
Very entertaining and informative , thank you.
We are looking at July for HCMC & Danang, but as others have advised can be wet +/- humid.
Still researching.......

Has anyone had issues paying for the Vietnam Visa in the past? I completed the form, but when I clicked "I agree to pay," I got the error message below. Didn't even get to enter a c/card. I hate it when these IT systems fail.

I logged out, logged back in, and changed my password. Nothing works. I have sent an email, but there has been no response yet.

I had to submit visa application for three of us and never had a glitch. Are you trying to use incognito browser mode ? Try clearing the cache/cookies and use fresh browsing session. It worked alright without any issues.

I'm sure you're on top of it, but just checking, are you using one of these two websites?

https://evisa.gov.vn/

https://thithucdientu.gov.vn/

They are the only ones you should use. Basically, anything else is a 3rd party intermediary, charging you extra on top of the actual govt visa fee.

Yes, using the first one. I got to it through Smart Traveller as I heard there were non-legit sites.

Yeah, icognito didn't work either. I also tried Firefox instead of Chrome. Looks like it's a bug on their end. Hoopefully they fix it soon

Just for the record, as it may be useful for others, I am adding to the rave reviews for the Legend.
Heritage rooms are the way to go, at whatever level works for your budget, of course - and the limo pick up service to and from the airport was wonderful.
My stay was just pre-COVID, so a little dated. But they have been doing great work for a long time, and I would be surprised if standards have slipped.

OK, so Vietnam it is! I got the partner onboard (after he asked a friend about Vietnam who said Danang was beautiful )

I also secured SQ J seats from Singapore to Vietnam and back but had to swap around Hanoi and HCMC to get the flights to connect with our current SQ award seats. 26,000 VF points SIN-SGN and 38,000 VF points HAN-SIN per pax.

The flights are with SQ, so I'm hoping they will check our bags to Vietnam (and home) even though they are separate award bookings.

I wanted to stay in Hoi An, but unfortunately, there are no Accor properties there now, and I need to stay with Accor to make Platinum, so I'll make a day trip or two to Hoi An from Danang.

Someone has also recommended Bana Hills for a night, so I can easily add a night somewhere. The hotels are so reasonable I'd book there, leave for a night, and return to a current booking (probably Pullman).

I haven't booked any hotels yet, so open to any feedback or suggestions on this itinerary.

Overnight flight SQ 246 - BNE-SIN
Day 1 - SIN-SGN - Sofitel Saigon
Day 2 - Sofitel Saigon
Day 3 - Sofitel Saigon
Day 4 - SGN-DAD - Novotel Danang Premier Han River (or Grand Mercure Danang - still deciding_
Day 5 - Novotel or Grand Mercure
Day 6 - Novotel or Grand Mercure
Day 7 - Pullman Resort Danang
Day 8 - Pullman Resort Danang
Day 9 - Pullman Resort Danang
Day 10 - Pullman Resort Danang
Day 11 - DAD-HAN - Grand Mercure Hanoi
Day 12 - Grand Mercure Hanoi
Day 13 - HAN-SIN, SIN-BNE (overnight flight)
An update on the itinerary - I booked Grand Mercure Danang instead of Novotel.

HERA agent Cameron Redgwell (he has a great YouTube channel focused on Accor properties here) recommended it over the Novotel and he was able to secure me an upgrade to an Executive Suite. Also, I only originally booked a Deluxe Queen with Privilege access, so it was amazing to get a room with lounge access for only $120 per night.

He also got me a US$100 dining/beverage credit with the Saigon Sofitel book and I get all the Accor points with my booking.

Looking forward to it. :)

That’s a nice upgrade.
Having stayed at the Novotel several times and the GM just the once I do disagree with some of his views and definitely rate the Novotel higher but everyone is different

Thanks for the shoutout here mate, appreciate your support of the Channel and I hope you enjoy Grand Mercure Danang. As everyone knows it's one of my favourite Accor properties.

We’ve just wrapped up our holiday at 5 different Accor properties in Vietnam and thought I’d share a quick round-up in case it’s helpful for anyone planning a trip. We’re Accor Plus members and I received Platinum status just a few weeks before this trip, so some of the perks we received were related to that — but even without status, there’s excellent value to be had.

Thanks to everyone in this thread who helped me with my itinerary. This was a wonderful trip and we both commented that it’s been the most relaxing and luxurious holiday we’ve ever experienced. The Accor Platinum perks made a big difference!

1. Sofitel Saigon Plaza (Ho Chi Minh City) - 3 NIGHTS

Our first stop in Vietnam and an absolute standout. We were upgraded to a Prestige Suite and had access to what turned out to be the best lounge of the trip. The evening canapés were generous, beautifully presented, and paired with a proper coughtail list and a nice French sparkling wine. There was also the option to order two dishes from an a la carte menu every evening so essentially it was a full meal and there was no need to go out for dinner. Lounge breakfast was excellent.

Staff were polished, friendly, and genuinely warm — the staff in the lounge remembered our names and preferences, which made a real difference.

The pool was a nice bonus and a lovely oasis from the heat and chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. The location was ideal: just outside the busiest part of District 1, but still very convenient.

We also met the general manager Alistair who was a great guy and recommended the restaurant ST25 by Koto in the hotel which has a social mission to train disadvantaged kids. The meal was excellent!

This hotel and Platinum recognition set the benchmark for the trip — a truly 5-star experience. Note - I forgot to take a photo of the room but it was on the club lounge floor with a great view of HCMC.

2. Grand Mercure Danang - 3 NIGHTS

We didn’t request an early check-in, but still received a warm welcome and a lovely upgrade to a family suite — a huge room with great views. The bed was massive and incredibly comfortable. We were celebrating an anniversary and the welcome amenity was a really thoughtful touch.

The restaurant options here are excellent. We did the all-you-can-eat dim sum (highly recommend, especially with the Accor Plus discount — it came to an incredibly low price for what was offered and we ended up visiting the dim sum Golden Dragon restaurant 3 times on this trip). The Friday night BBQ buffet with free-flow beer and loads of seafood. Both meals were terrific value.

GM David personally welcomed us and took time to share insights about the hotel — a really nice touch.

The lounge was fine for drinks and a few coughtails, but the food offering was underwhelming compared to other hotels (though to be fair, we’d just come from the Sofitel lounge!). Still, with the restaurant quality and discounts, it didn’t really matter.

Amazing value — we’d stay again in a heartbeat.

3. Grand Mercure Ba Na Hills French Village - 1 NIGHT

I was in two minds about booking this trip to Bana Hills and hotel because I was concerned it might be too much like Disneyland but we’re so glad we went.

This was a fun and slightly surreal experience — the French Village is kitschy, beautiful, and oddly magical, especially after the day-trippers leave.

Check-in was via a special lounge and felt seamless. Our porter Mir was a standout — he helped us with our bags to and from the cable car and gave us a lovely warm welcome. We were in our room by 1pm, an hour before standard check-in.

The room itself was comfortable and had a great view of the cathedral and square. Only downside was the open-plan bathroom (not a fan), though the bathtub was a nice touch.

The food was surprisingly good. We had lunch at L’Étable and the buffet dinner later — both 50% off with Accor Plus, and the dinner had a huge variety.

Breakfast buffet was solid, though busy. But the real highlight was waking up early, getting that perfect sunrise shot of the Golden Bridge, and wandering the mist-free village before the crowds arrived.

Highly recommended for a one-night stay — affordable and truly unique.

4. Pullman Danang Beach Resort - 3 NIGHTS

Early check-in was given without asking (1pm instead of 3pm), and we were upgraded to a suite with a partial ocean view. The room was excellent — big, light-filled, with a huge balcony and two smaller ones. We were close to both the pool and beach.

Service here was top-notch from the moment we arrived. A welcome mocktail and full explanation of benefits set the tone, and drinks at the rooftop bar included top-shelf coughtails.

As Platinum guests, we were also invited to the Friday night drinks and canapé event, which was a lovely touch.

All meals — from the beachfront café to the BBQ dinner to lunch and dinner in the main restaurant — were excellent and great value with the Accor Plus 50% discount. The breakfast buffet was outstanding: great variety, barista coffee, and proactive staff.

The gym was well equipped, and the gender-specific steam/sauna/plunge pools were spotless and a great addition.

No executive lounge here, which is a shame — hopefully something they consider adding. But honestly, the service across the board was so good it didn’t really matter. The stay was incredibly relaxing and helped us totally chill into the holiday vibe at this point. Amazing massages abound in the area.

We loved this place and Danang in general — already planning to return.

5. Grand Mercure Hanoi - 2 NIGHTS

We were checked in at the lounge on the 15th floor with a warm welcome and a beautiful afternoon tea service (more like a high tea). Our suite upgrade was possibly the nicest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in — absolutely stunning.

Evening drinks and canapés were excellent, with a proper coughtail menu (though the sparkling wine was a forgettable Spumante). Viet in the lounge deserves special mention for his exceptional, attentive service — he really made us feel welcome.

Staff across the board were fantastic — helpful, friendly, and proactive. The concierge even came upstairs to offer suggestions for things we could do on a public holiday.

The rooftop bar offers a great view and excellent coughtails, though the city smog made it hard to enjoy for too long. The fitness centre and pool were top-notch.

Only small letdown was the limited lounge buffet for breakfast (there was a very good a la carte menu though) but that’s a minor quibble in an otherwise exceptional stay.

We’d absolutely stay here again.

Final Thoughts

What really stood out across all five hotels was the consistent and generous recognition of Accor status — particularly Platinum. Whether it was suite upgrades, personalised welcomes and amenities, lounge access, or thoughtful extras like anniversary treats, every hotel made us feel genuinely valued. The combination of warm service, excellent value (especially with Accor Plus), and great locations made this one of the best series of holiday hotel experiences we’ve had anywhere.

As you may have read earlier in this thread, my partner was not sold on Vietnam and took quite a bit of convincing for us to book. Now he can’t wait to come back. 😂

Highly recommend Vietnam as an Accor destination!

Thanks @goldenhorn for your thoughts and photos.
We have locked in our hotels for July (I know it's going to be hot and humid!), sadly am just humble Gold A+

• Ibis Saigon Airport first night as we don't get in until 9pm
• Sofitel Saigon Plaza (Lounge access)
• Pullman Danang

Am thinking about Bana Hills, question please - can it only be accessed by cable car? I don't do heights very well - Kuranda taught me that!
And how did you get from HCMC to Danang?
Glad you both had a great time.
Keen to hear of any further highlights/must do's.

I think you’ll find that even Gold recognition is very good in Vietnam. They love Accor members!

I believe you can only get to Bana Hills by cable car. The ride was smooth and the cable cars are in great condition. It’s about 20 min up and an initially beautiful scenic ride, but much was in the clouds once we got about 5 min in, so perhaps that might help your fear of heights as you can only see clouds with about 50 metres visibility.

For internal flights, we used Vietnam Airlines in economy class and they were easy and efficient.

Everything ran on time other than one departure, which was an hour delayed on a public holiday. I will definitely fly them again (and after reading online reviews of Vietjet, I will never fly that airline!)

You’re going to have an amazing time at the Sofitel Saigon Plaza and Pullman Danang. We cannot wait to go back to both hotels.

On this holiday instead of booking tours I just used AI for self touring and it was excellent. I told the ChatGPT app where I was, what time frames we had and what types of things I liked to do and it created an excellent itinerary for each day. Then in each location I just used AI to give me a brief summary of what it was we were looking at.

We actually did book a half day Klook tour of HCMC, but the tour guide was so painful and we felt so trapped that we ditched the tour before the end of it (the guide was horrified we left early!).

Much prefer to have AI as my tour guide these days. It’s the future of travel! 😝

Great write up. Agree with your sentiments regarding Vietnam and how status guests are looked after. Even a couple on your list that we haven’t stayed at and we have been to Vietnam several times.
If you do go back I thoroughly recommend the Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi as they have looked after us amazingly everytime and it’s a fantastic hotel IMO. Some others we haven’t stayed at stayed at are the Banyan Tree LangCo, Pullman Vung Tau, Novotel HaLong Bay and Novotel Saigon and all were good.
I’m the odd one out it seems as many people prefer the Grand Mercure DaNang but I still think after staying at both that the Novotel DaNang is better and hence we have returned there a couple of times since
