When did they last have this ?.
Was it 12500 miles ?

That was maybe two years ago, can't really remember. The deal was 40k Amex MR points = 20K SPG. In transferring 20k to AA/US you got the extra 5k, so now 25k plus 50% on top so 37.5k AA/US points. So very close to 1:1 for your MR points.

Great deal but not seen since.

You never know , now that QF have sacked the work experience kid , AA might take him or her on.

I bought 20K SPG points several weeks ago, cost AUD$680 .... if I opted for the transfer to AA, $680 / 30K AA ... that's AU2.26 cents per point, converting that back to USD, it would be approx US 1.7cents per point, and this is probably as good as a 100% bonus. So to me, this would be a very good offer.

Too bad I have already allocated my 20K points toward accomodation worth >$2,000

That's amazing value! Which property?

Le Meridien Maritius, it's a category 2 property, so using 5 nights cost 19,000 points. The current offer, 30% prepaid - no changes etc, is EUR251 per night .... or around AUD$370 per night x 5 = $1850 :) The flexible option is over EUR300 per night.

The room I booked sounds nice: Premium deluxe room, non-smoking: King Bed, 538 sq ft / 50 m², Balcony with amazing view,Separate luxury shower/bath, 42-inch plasma TV, Spacious sitting area.

Great deal for converting to AA. Been waiting for this. Think it only happens once a year...

Dammit, transferred my 22,000 worth last week. Oh well, they were due to expire soon so no point sitting around

Offer has been extended to 31st August

Hmmm, I would have to spend $11783 on Woolworths Wish Cards to get me over the next 40K MR points hurdle, so that's not going to happen before 31 August. So looks like I won't be able to take advantage of the extension. I did manage the collect the bonus earlier.

This sounds like a great deal which I am keen to take advantage of. However, I have a question regarding the best value for Amex MR points. Am I better off transferring them to an airline or hotel loyalty program, or using them to book travel either via Webjet or Amex Travel? The benefit I see with booking travel directly is that there is no restriction on availability like there is for award seats or rooms, and you receive loyalty points and status credits for the booking.

So so which is the best option?

Depends on the number of points you have and how you value them.

As a bench mark I look at the 188000 point, $190 redemption return business class transpacific on VA and how much the same would be to redeem using "Webjet or Amex Travel".

You will usually get more value per point transferring them to another loyalty programme particularly for premium flights. Booking with Webjet etc tends to give a fixed (lowish) value per point but as you say offers convenience and choice. In most loyalty schemes there is the opportunity for arbitrage of the value. Extracting the maximum value does require knowledge of the ins and outs of the various schemes.

I did some dummy bookings for flights through Amex travel and the points required is based on the revenue fare at a rate of 100 MR points per dollar, so the same as the Webjet rate of 10,000 MR points for $100. For serfty's example of MEL-LAX in J the best I found was over 500,000 MR points on AirNZ. Given that VA transfers at 1:1 that is well over twice the points burn even after the $190 taxes are taken into account. Thanks for the assistance guys, I will go with the AA transfer via SPG to add to my already significant AA haul from bonus purchase offers.

That's not a bad little bit of bonus. Wish they still had the old awards chart in place though :-( Oh well, change is inevitable I suppose.

It has returned and the timing couldn't be better give my recent credit card aquisitions!

Just finished transferring SPG to AA at 60000 per day to earn total extra bonus through this promotion of 125k miles...
I've done this now for 3 years and even with recent devaluation to AA redeem rates this 125k will give me a one way Per - LHR in F...1m Amex = 500k spg = 25 lots of 20k = 25 lots of an extra 5k..... For me, this is the promotion I wait for before transferring and of course it also re-sets any expiry dates.
