Having never been close to any kind of status, I don't know how it works.
I only need 20 more SC to achieve Silver, but my year expires in November. If I took a flight and collected the extra 20 points, do I only have Silver status until this November or does it last for 12 months?

When you achieve status, you get it for the remainder of the year and the whole of the next year. So in your case, you will be silver until November 2023.
Some answers to your questions regarding status
Thanks for that detailed explanation, @kangarooflyer88. Definitely some new info there for me.

Unfortunately everything is now on hold because of the situation in Central Asia, where I was hoping to visit next year. I've had a trip booked since early 2020 and have had to postpone it repeatedly.
I think I will take a short status flight to make Silver, even if retaining it is looking a bit wobbly. You never know what might happen in the future.
What flight number is SYD - DXB, EK4xx or QF8xx_?
So long as you know about QFF SC earn flying with EK, even though if its booked via QF.
Sorry to prattle on about it.
Will let it be now.
No, no, prattle away. :) I'm always keen to learn a bit more. I was looking at QF8413/12, but as I said above, that's on hold now. One of the countries is still not allowing travellers and two others are quibbling, which means we'd only be able to visit one or the other, making it 2 Stans, instead of 5.
Save you reading the entire thread, look at my post #657 - based on the sage inputs from those before me.

If you need to fly anyway before the end of your status year, the 50 SCs from Green Tier can be used in the next membership year. So only 200 extra to retain Silver!

Thanks for the Green suggestion, although I don't think that's for me.
