20 yr Qantas FF and NEVER been upgraded... are upgrades like Rainbow Unicorns??

I'm an ongoing PS (as is MrsB) with 30 years of low status QFF membership.
We fly Y domestic & Y+ or JASA international.
The only Op Up we received was to the Exit Row (Y) on Jetstar domestic. Does that count?

So bit of a random question.. I've been a Qantas FF for 20 yrs (can't believe I'm ageing myself so much) and in that time I've been an on/off Silver but never Gold member. I've had Qantas Club membership.. again on/off.. and usually take anywhere between 4-10 flights per year domestic and occasionally international. In that time I have NEVER been offered an upgrade... I'm flying to HK in a few weeks and trying to decide if I should push my luck and ask for an upgrade on check in (i'm travelling solo)... OR are they like rainbow unicorns and only appear for the truly lucky (or serious Frequent Flyer...)?????

Lower your expectations and be happy!!

I know someone who's been a FF for 15 years and she's 15, so don't beat yourself up on the age metric.

Happy flighting

You fly at peak times - I generally don't these days.
And even more surprising the business cabins on QF are mainly full. It is very rare to see free seats in business on my flights.

1 in 100 flights sounds about what my experience is too.
Of course, those chances would increase if it were all Y flying.
Yes, some are luckier than others.

My view is that the line 'I don't have the authority' is a convenient (and understandable) response to an upgrade request at check-in.
Try that often enough and you may have to start worrying about op-downs.

It's definitely timing & luck. On a recent flight I was upgraded to J on 4 out of 6 sectors on PX, QF & CX. Other upgrades over 38 years of business related travel never yielded a result like that.

When you really want an upgrade you generally never get it. When you're not worrying about it you sometimes get it. Moral, on long hall purchase J, and travel Y for shorthall & be happy!!!

Greg, Plat.

The only time I didn't want an upgrade was when my friend was travelling on the same flight with a different PNR... and they sent me up to Y+.

... wouldn't bother me  ... unless Mrs Paddy was the 'friend' in which case life wouldn't be worth living if I did it

Oh I'm ALWAYS happy to be flying... for 1) someone else cooks and cleans up 2) No one can call me - am dreading when they end up having mobile ph rececption 3) if travelling without kids I get at least 1 hour of uninteruppted "me time"... next week it will be 8 hours of movies, reading and chilling out- whoo hoo!!

If she loved you enough she would be happy for you when you get the upgrade. Plus an upgrade would keep you out of her hair for a few hours. ;)

If I'm feeling really brave I might try that logic out.... Nah, I'm not that brave :)
