As a Velocity Gold, you may be able to obtain a grant of HHonors gold status.

Back when I was a gold the HSW always provided executive lounge access.

On the note of "Spouse stays Free" - If a hotel typically gives Diamonds (who select the 'upgrade/breakfast' myway option) the choice of Exec lounge or main breakfast dining then the spouse stays free generally applies (never had it not apply personally).

However, if you, say, book an executive level room at a rate for one with "included full breakfast" then breakfast would generally be available for your spouse in the Exec lounge, but not in the main restaurant.

As someone who has not stayed at HMSW before, can someone clarify that if I went for the $156 King Room option I would be able to access the lounge for an additional $75?

Unless the lounge is overcrowded in which case they could say no.

Thanks guys, it sounds like going with the $249 exec room may be the way to go as that way I'll be guaranteed access (including breakfast in the lounge the next morning which partially offsets the premium above the standard king room).

Scoffing at the lounge gets my vote too. Have just booked the night at HMSW, should be a good one.

I'm working on Shrek at the minute, he's a maybe. I've booked the HSW ( exec floor) chickened out on the upgrade risk as I figured there'll be too many Diamonds above me
Now I have to find a cheapie on DJ/JQ to MEL
