2015 Amex Centurion Benefits

Hi folks,

I've just received a large square piece of black ceramic (or similar substance), with the words:

'YOU ARE INVITED TO APPLY

CENTURION

WE AWAIT YOUR RESPONSE

(with an email address to respond)'

This is my first invitation, but it includes no detail about what the benefits are, what it costs, or whether the joining fee will be waived. I've read this entire thread and it doesn't sound like you received similar invitations, so I'm curious if others have received the same invitation.

For info, my personal spend has been 100-200k for the last 3 years on the Plat Charge Card.

As a supplementary question, are you all paying a % fee to pay your tax using the card? And if so, is it still worth it?

$5000 a year. If you travel enough, you will break even. I have just replied on my issues with Cent on the other active thread.

Thanks Sparoz,

I was really asking about the contents/form of my invitation as it seems that others have received information with the invitation, but all I received was this large (~20 cm2) tablet with the words I've transcribed. Is this the norm?

Sorry, I'm a relative novice on this forum - which other thread are you referring to?

Also, can anyone provide guidance on the fee for paying tax with the AMEX?

ATO 1.45%; 0.5 points per $.

Thanks again.

So it doesn't sound like paying tax with AMEX is cost effective...

Paying say $200k in tax would cost $2.9k and earn you 100k points, which are worth approx between $1k and $2k. Am I missing something?

Hey Sparoz, how do you access an RM in Hong Kong rather than Australia?

Not RM, but their travel team - they are actually more hopeless than the Australian ones, but they do get the details more spot on. I initially asked for a Pacific Circle starting from HK, and the travel team deals with the HK team to have it organised. Since then I just send request to the travel executive on the Cent HK travel email directly. Someone will always pick up the request and act on it.

Well depends how you spend your points. If you have CX Diamond, then it is definitely worth it. I can see you have QF WP, so if they open seats up for reward for you like CX then it is worth it.

I got this too. If you email them, they will send you all the details.

I already pay my tax using my Plat card. To be honest, I care more about the points because they can be transferred to any FF and then used for upgrades when going overseas. I caught the Malaysia Air deal for LON-AUS return for 102k (flew my mum-in-law in between crashes!!) and I've used plenty on VA. Overall the benefits of upgrades outweigh the cost in fees over the year, but as always this depends on your situation.

No ANZ Black love? 1-1.5ppd depending on which airline FF program is 2-3x the Amex-issued card earn rate of 0.5ppd. You'd break even on the annual fee pretty quickly I would think.

No ANZ Black love?

I thought I responded to this but seems it vanished. I'm in the process of streamlining my cards at the moment, so will look into a few other options. I assume it's the same process? ANZ Rewards >> FF ? I don't fly Qantas really, so the rewards one would be better...

edit: I think it's the new Edge browser on Win10 playing up...

Thanks Danpez.

Did you sign up for Centurion? And did they waive the joining fee?

Re points - I'll need to improve my point-using skills as I can see the benefit of paying tax with AMEX if I can.

My invitation comes with an email... Actually I've received the same invitation twice in two months with different expiry dates.... tried to get the joining fee waived with no success....

Just submitted the application last friday and hopefully can get the card by next week...

Yes. It's 1.5ppd to Velocity or 1ppd to KrisFlyer. If you go VA -> KF though, it's effectively 1.11ppd. That's A LOT better than 0.5ppd on an Amex-direct charge or credit card.
(If you did want Qantas, then the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black would be the go at 1.5ppd to Qantas.)
