MrsK and I did a much smaller version of your road trip a few years ago, driving the old coast road from LA to SFO.

In SFO we stayed at the Union Street Inn, which is in the middle of Cow Hollow and has a stack of bars and restaurants in that area. It's an old fashioned three storey timber house, that has a different vibe to a hotel. There's also a parking station a couple of hundred metres away which had a discount deal for parking. We visited more than a few bars, including Rose's Italian, and the Balboa Bar & Cafe.

While we were there, we bought a day pass for the public transport, which included the buses and trains, although you pay extra for the cable car. On the vintage tram route near the harbour, they have a range of trams/railcars from the 1930s, including one from Melbourne.

On the way from LA to SFO, we stayed in San Luis Obispo - which is a real foodie and wine centre, and also in Monterey. Three days is a good amount of time to take in the old road, as there are a lot of good places to pull up and have lunch, and just cruise along.

Heading off to Usa next month. LA, Palm Springs, Prescott AZ, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Aspen, Laramie, Cheyenne, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Custer, Cody, Yellowstone, Jackson and Tetons, Twin Falls Idaho, Lake Tahoe, Napa, SFO, then coast road back to LA over 3 days then Maui and finally Honolulu. Big trip and can’t wait as been grounded for over 2 years . Any recommendations will be appreciated

New 2022 plan added. Long weekend in Melbourne and travelling down to the Mornington Peninsula, somewhere that neither us has been. Hired a Telsa for the three days through evee. We'll SkyBus it into town as the car will be parked a block away from Southern Cross. Staying in an apt at Moonah Links booked through Stayz that was so much less than direct or even through AirBnB. Apparently a brewery a walk away. I know lots of wineries down there. Is the hot spring worth it? Recommendations?

You will have a wonderful time. My number one thing is to go to PtLeo estate - link above. Its a winery/restaurant although the magic is the stunning walk through sculpture park overlooking Pt Phillip Bay is breathtaking. I have been many times and take overseas guests there. It is a wonderful day/food is beautiful but book ahead (although there is a casual section and you can see sculptures only). It has international and Australian pieces and is the private collection of the owners. Similarly Montalto winery also has art in the vines. Both have great food (I dont drink alcohol). Merricks General Store has great coffee and breakfast in lovely setting. Can add more if you wish… enjoy

+1 for Montalto and the Merricks General Store. St Andrews Beach Brewery may be the brewery - nice pizzas if so.

Recently booked 10 days in Egypt in November, going QR J and F, after reading boomy's TR. I was there a couple of times in 1994 on business, and snuck in some tourist stuff - but this will be much more comfortable Could of days in Cairo, then to Aswan to start a week cruise, couple more days in Cairo.

Booking QR business, they put you in F DOH-CAI, as no business cabin. That means an Al Safwa visit at DOH.

We have just pulled the pin (perhaps the wrong expression to use at the moment) and booked for a month long trip to Germany in early August/early September this year. The trip will be in J on SQ arriving in Frankfurt and departing from Munich. This means we will be attending my wife's family reunion in Berlin on 25 -27 August. SQ was slightly cheaper than QR and as QR would most likely have us in the 'old' 777's with the 6 across seating for all flights we chose SQ.
