2023 Soccer Women's World Cup Discussion

Backlash from people that wanted the PH.

So, NSW Premier Minns does not have to honour his commitment to light up the Opera House if Matildas won the World Cup. Kind of a hollow offer when he should have supported the Matildas from the very start. Incidentally the World Cup is said to have contributed around $3.5b to the NSW economy.
There isn't any commitment if they didn't win though. I never liked the concept to begin with. Shouldn't have been raised until the winner was known. Pretty sure something on the fly could have happened, with only background non public discussion beforehand. But that isn't what politicians do these days unfortunately.

You can only play triangle if your team has a possession-based strategy. That requires higher skill level as they control the ball much longer.

Australia is more of sit back and counter-attack against England as they have higher skill levels. Hence England has most of the possession.

We just ran out of gas as we don't have the squad depth to rotate players throughout the tournament, and that introduces errors.

And then the smaller states will take a slice of that, and say thank you very much!
Every state would have loved more of the action though.

The commitment should have been on or before the very first Matildas game. The Opera House should have been lit up in support. None of this "We'll light up the Opera House, but they have to win first" BS.

Every state probably did gain some economic benefit to some degree or other. Presenting Australia to a world audience will of-course have a trailing affect as well to all states. The figure I recall for the Qld games was an expected $2.3b.

Agree that the better team clearly won on the night. But it was still a good effort and I was lucky enough to be standing behind the goal when she kicked it, rode it all the way from boot to net...certainly felt like slow motion. Still have the final to be at on Sunday, but I suspect that will be the enduring memory of the tournament for me.

A semi-final appearance should be regarded as a success especially given we were without our best player for the majority of the tournament. Hopefully we can beat Sweden to nab third overall, for whatever it means anyway.

A pleasure to be in attendance regardless of the result.

And flares. What the heck is it with flares and soccer. Even one let off in Memoral Drive tennis courts in SA packed with people. Should throw them in jail for a bit.
Jail for a flare? Come on now...

I think they have a very limited place for atmosphere etc, but Fed Square probably isn't it. If I had a family I wouldn't be going to Fed Square anyway, probably AAMI Park the better option in that scenario.

Football culture (and I am NOT referring to the small subset that stab and bash others as you see in Europe/Sth America) is not understood here at all. Case-in-point, last night those in what is referred to as the active area (i.e. stand and sing for the whole match) including myself were threatened with being ejected by security. At a World Cup semi-final. Thankfully someone had contact with an FA official who managed to get word to higher ups who came to a bizarre compromise of only standing when the ball was at the near end of the pitch. Eventually they gave up.

Of course those complaining were adorned in Wallabies gear. Tickets say obstructed view for a reason. The style of support that football involves will never be understood in this country.

There should never the ongoing talk of PH to begin with. Just a distraction for the Tillies.

If Albo want to do something proper rather than scoring popular points, he should provide long-term funding for the woman sport, and build a proper home for the Socceroos and Matildas. Soccer/Football is the only sport that really unites the country.

The Matilda's made the country proud and the politicians decided to take advantage and make it all about them in return with the bizarre public holiday stuff.

Disgraceful piggy backing on the success of others, but I guess that is all politicians do, anyway.

Olympics, (collection of sports).

Cricket quite largely.

Ash Barty.

Aussies love an Australian winner. We also love events, and special occasions. One of my sports has been yacht racing. Everyone jumped on board when we won the America's Cup.

Now what sustains interest in a sport is another matter.
