2025 travel plans

We were very lucky in Malaga as we were on a cruise and their excursions not necessarily good. But our guide was Norwegian but had lived in Malaga for years. He was an Art Historian who specialised in Architecture so our half day excursion - strolling Malaga with Picasso - was excellent. Both the Picasso Museum and his boyhood home are well worth visiting.

Me too although they only look like a room for 1. I wonder what I’ll do with Mr Seat0A 🤭
I booked a large double bed room, not the single bed one (it was cheaper in Dec; although at EUR1320 for 28 days during Euro summer the single bed was very tempting!) Too old to skimp on mattress space - it’s my 40th bday trip after all! Can’t be travelling like i’m in my 20’s again haha

Wow @chitown_boy that sounds absolutely amazing and I will enjoy reading your TR for sure.

For our trip, we didn’t use trains - we had a rental car which suited us very well so sorry I’m no help on the train pass.

I’m quite envious of your time in Berlin. I “speak” quite good German - by which I mean my reading is excellent. My listening is very good but my speaking frustratingly lets me down- I know what is being said and what I want to say back but then struggle to get my response out in the normal flow of conversation. A month’s immersion is just what I need!
Bit off topic, so apologies in advance, but I suspect the difficulty in speaking German is getting the grammar right - ie ordering your nouns, (ad)verbs and adjectives, conjugating the verbs correctly, remembering gender, and getting those damn pronouns right (which I struggle a lot with)

Much easier when reading or listening cos you can just piece together all the bits in your head to derive meaning and not worry about getting all the above specifics right on the spot

I really enjoyed Malaga - sadly the queue to get into the Picasso museum was way too long with the time I had available but there is a lovely cafe across the road - I'll find the info and post it. Remind me if I don't
Curious, was the queue for door ticket sales or even for ppl with advanced purchases? In peak travel season Aug ‘23 I managed to walk straight into the Picasso Museum in Barcelona with my pre-bought ticket and no line (although VERY crowded inside). It was a rather small exhibit tho…no idea what the Malaga one is like but would like to know as i’ll def check it out in June this year

I'm not sure because I didn't have long so just looked at the queue and went to a cafe

Malaga Piccaso museum is two storey and has quite a lot of his (and only his) work there. As I'm not really interested in his work, I can't tell you much more except the people I was travelling with thought it a marvellous collection.

Thanks @Seat0B ! I’ve done MAD and BCN to death (both 2 x in last 2 years alone) and was keen on building a long itinerary to tick off the other cities (1 month in Spain and 1 month ‘working from home’ in BER to improve my budding German!) I’m going back to MAD for Madrid Pride, which I went last year as well (but returning because it was an amazing experience, largest pride in Europe, several districts get closed down in the final 3-4 nights for street parties - including the Mr Gay España paegent with the winners from the 17 regions of Spain facing off in the capital, which is a total hoot - that stretch across different plazas around Gran Via!) Question, did you travel around Spain by Renfe? And did you find it cheaper buying individual tickets or the Renfe pass? That’s what i’m trying to figure out atm and not sure if the Renfe pass restricts your ability to book onto trains at more popular times or whether it is open slather?)

As an aside, doing Berlin a bit differently this time and staying in a (surprisingly cheap even by Berlin standards) medium-term serviced apartment initiative with shared living, rooftop lounging and co-working spaces (Circus Living Berlin) with ppl who stay there being ppl who are or considering moving to Berlin (min. 28 nights).

I agree with many ppl here re BCN, I really didn’t love it on my first visit back in 2014 but its really grown on me over the years. It doesn’t have that classic European al fresco dining and aperol spritz sipping vibe that you normally get in Med hotspots (which is very strange since there are plenty of beaches). Maybe it’s cos most of the sights tend to be away from the beaches and surrounded by narrow medieval lanes? But museums, nightlife and the beach are big ticket items for me and I quickly overcame my gripe of the overly touristy and constant faint whiff of sewage vibes 😂 But there’s also a general consensus among locals that MAD locals are much nicer to tourists, which you do kind of sense when you’re in BCN. On the flip side, I’ve discovered that BCN is a surprisingly walkable city! (MAD def not)

Oops, just realised you were commenting on my work trips, not my birthday trip ! Ha…yeh, pretty blessed with a job I love that can fund so much travel. But i’ll save the details / stories from those for my first trip reports as a newb! Should be interesting as i’m consolidating all my work accomodation (~80 nights) into Marriott Bonvoy hotels this year and checking out some really nice properties I wouldn’t be able to afford at personal expense.
We did a daytrip to Sitges in June 2019 and stumbled across their final day of Gay Pride. The Town was alive with music, really enjoyed it @chitown_boy

Wow - E54/night for the double, for a month in mid summer. I have 2 trips planned mid year, a month apart. Wonder if the Travel Agent will voodoo doll me if I ask to cancel them and rebook just one? Actually I can't - got stuff happening during that month but this is a great find, thanks.

EDIT: Street view shows the construction - and there is a main rail line adjacent too.

I originally found it on booking.com but it was more exy (suspect they were taking a cut), so I went to the source and was very pleased I did!

Ha ha. Yes, always look up on booking.com then go direct with the host, if you can. Even if its the same price, if an individual (say B&B) they appreciate it more (I usually tell them I saw them on b.com)

I wanted accomodation right next to Ostbahnhof as it’s the perfect station for me to get everywhere I normally need to quickly in Berlin (and is often a stop on the intercity DB trains in Germany with no need to get to the Hauptbahnhof first)

I finally made my first hotel booking for May 2025 trip to Scotland via Manchester (arrival) and Liverpool (to get it out of Mr Denali's Beatles wants). 48hrs inside Changi airport for a layover on the way home, where we want to sit outside in the sun by the pool and finally see the Jewel 🤣

I really have to start planning our trip
Hey @Denali

I spent time in Liverpool for Eurovision two years ago.

I am sure you know all this but here is my penny’s worth.

There are two ‘main’ Beatles museums - I much prefer the one in Matthew Street in the Cavern Quarter ( this street was the site of all the clubs they played and has lots of sculptures ie Cilla etc).

This museum has items from Neil Aspinall (Apple records manager and friend of Paul Mc) who had an affair with Pete Best’s mother (Mona Best)! Mona was a canny businessman (and much much older and booked many of the first Beatles gigs etc.) It was Aspinall’s son Roag who set up this museum. I liked it because the genesis of the band is authentically documented and really interesting. Its in a lovely listed building AND just down from the Cavern Club (MrD will know)

I found this had too many recreations for my liking but fans do both.

The sculpture of the Fab 4 on the waterfront facing the Mersey is very cool. I will let you do research about one item in each of the four statues put in my the sculpter that many don't know about. I found out about it waiting in the women's toilet Q at Eurovillage when I started chatting to a Beatles Guide for Liverpool!!

Tate Museum nearby in Albert Dock has lovely food and Art - there are 4 in Liverpool. There are multiple Tate Galleries. I went looking for the Kim Cattrall painting that won portrait artist of the year in the main gallery (but sadly she had been swapped for a Tom Jones from Wales!).

If you plan on driving Liverpool One is the best and cheapest car parking I have used anywhere in the world. Massive spaces/plate recognition and located inside a very useful central shopping centre. I booked here for Eurovision and it was about $20 day with muliple exit/entry. If you book via the shopping centre website get a discount.

Any more just ask

Ditto for Scotland. Know a great place for breakfast halfway between Liverpool and Edinburgh

Highly recommend - Ambleside Lakes District

OK I now need you to find something this cheap somewhere further south in Europe for me please :p

That really is fantastic value and I don't really don't have a great desire to go back to Berlin

Bit ancient now but Post 52 had a bit of a summary of what we did. Without being fans of bullfighting, we thought the bullring & museum was amazing. At the time the food/drinks were a relaxed experience with plenty of people watching
Mmmmm Post 52 in this thread isn't by you and there is nothing about a bullring in this thread by you
