Haha was referring to rogerkambah. I'm thinking of doing BUD for 3 nights, overnight in VIE just for a stickybeak then 3 nights in PRG and 3 in BER..

Oh, as it is Jess's thread I thought you were asking her. We bypassed VIE this time as we had been before and only had a limited time for HEL (inc day in Tallinn), BUD, PRG (3 days each), 12 days UK, 7 days BKK (family).

I'm really enjoying reading your trip report JT. I was in New York in January 2014. It's my favourite city and I always like reading of other people's adventures there.

That's the shot - and no wonder I was losing track! There must be good reasons for the about-turn in the US and back over to Europe ;).
Now John, did you read my first post? ;) I had to get to Bermuda somehow, and going the shortest route is not my style.

oh, the GCM was not quite right. It should have been FCO-MUC-IAD as opposed to FCO-IAD

Precisely - good reasons - shortest route, especially in LOTFAP, is not my style either ;).

I have spent the last three or so weeks resisting the temptation to post pictures of cakes and chocolates. Until now. So with apologies to Anna here are some pictures of a chocolate and cake shop in Prague. Some of the chocolates were liberated, however their liberty was short lived. ;)

On Saturday evening I met a FlyerTalker margaritahh who had taken advantage of the same fare as I had and we went to the IcePub, where “Everything is made of ice”. Actually the walls of the coolroom had blocks of ice stacked in front of them, and the glasses were ice. I was hoping that it would be reminiscent of the ice hotel in Sweden (?) but was sadly disappointed. It was a bit of fun, though. Not that will I worry about a return visit.

Afterwards we walked towards the Town Square and had a bite to eat before going our separate ways. I was pleased to find out that I was the first FTer that margaritahh had met. I had to admit that I was on AFF quite a bit more than FT.

Are those delicious looking chocos as expensive as they are in Aus? I hope so, otherwise I may go there and eat myself to death.

well accoding to XE.com the 120czk per 100g translates to just over $6.20 per 100g. Is that good value?

Bishkek

I headed out to the Metro and at the end of the line jumped on the 119 airport bus and made my way to the Airport. Checkin did not open until 0900 so I sat tight for 5 minutes, and then was first in line for the J queue. I was give a express pass for immigration which worked a treat. And then I turned into one of those people who holds up everyone else. I took my liquids and MBA out of my case and sent it all through the scanner. Wait. Wait. Wait. “Can you open your bag please”? So all my goods and chattels were then sent through the scanner again. That security agent went through it all again, only to say “That’s all, thanks”, and I was on my way. They had found nothing.

I used the Menzies contract lounge and sat and watched a few planes come and go before I headed to the gate.

A fairly new A321-200 waited for me and I settled into 3A. The flight was uneventful with a pleasant enough meal. Little was I to know how well I was to enjoy it.

Two and a half hours later I was settling myself into the IST CIP TK lounge. The lounge has expanded since I was there last. They have expanded downstairs to an area about the same as the upstairs, effectively doubling the size of the lounge. The pool table is still upstairs, but now there is a Scalectrix track and golf practice net downstairs.

I spent a pleasant few hours in the lounge and then headed down to the gate for my flight to Bishkek. A nice shiny new BSI B737-800 sitting there for me. I settled in - there were only 4 of 16 sitting in J.

The flight was just under five hours, and I found myself eating the same meal as the previous flight.

Bishkek

I settled in and watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I was quite enjoying a glass or two of champagne during the movie, and once the film had finished, I got up to ask for more only to find that it was all gone. I think I just drank my first plane dry of champagne - by myself. Oops. TK really should load more champagne. I switched to water for the last hour of the flight.

Incidentally we passed over Georgia, Azerbaijan and Kurdistan on the way to Kyrgyzstan.

The flight arrived at 0330 and I headed off the plane for the transit area. Oh, wait, there isn't one. Everyone has to go through the immigration channel, with their visas of course. Except I did not have a visa.

So I joined the queue anyway (there was no other way through) and when I got to the counter I said "Transit" to the guard as nicely as I could (and I can be pretty nice - some of you have seen me in action). I handed over my passport (hoping to see it again) and a copy of my eticket for my next leg back to IST. He said "Transit"? I said "Yes, transit". He said "Visa"? I said "No visa", transit. He handed back my eticket, stamped my passport and also handed it back. I entered Kyrgyzstan.

There were about 7 hours before my flight back to IST so I approached the TK check-in hoping they could issue a BP so I could go and use the lounge airside. They said I had to come back at 9am. *sad face*. I asked if I checked in online if they could print the BP. "No".

I spent a lovely five hours in the checkin area at Bishkek international airport.

The bench seats were almost comfortable and it was almost possible to sleep. Had it not been for the continuous announcements that checkin was open for every flight that checkin was open for. Continuous. When there was only one flight checking in, the announcement was every 30 seconds. Now I am not in any way going to cast aspersions over the population of Bishkek, but surely if you knew you had to check in, you would go to the checkin counter. There were only three of them. And the flights available to check in were listed on the screens.

At 0915 the checkin counter for my flight opened, so I made my way over and was soon handed my BPs.

I approached the passport control (just the next counter over) and my passport was inspected (gulp), stamped and handed back. :)

The Business lounge was a collection of comfy chairs (that I would have liked last night) some drinks and that was about it. The attendant offered me a drink so I had a nice cup of tea while waiting for my flight.

You may wonder why I put myself through this. I had some TK points that were about to be devalued to the point where it would have been difficult for me to use them otherwise. Bishkek is also one of those locations that is a little cheaper to fly from than others. A bit like BDA-JFK-LAX is cheaper than JFK-LAX.

Would I do this again? Maybe.

Back to IST

We boarded and I was soon heading back to IST. This was a separate booking to the last two flights, so for some reasons my VGML wasn't on my profile. Which means I had a reprieve from the same meal for the third time! I chose a chicken dish that was quite good. Roast chicken, mashed potato and roasted veggies.

Once again I was on a BSI B737-800 which was quite comfortable. This time I think there were 5/16 pax in J. I ate and then curled up to sleep for the rest of the 5 hour journey.

They allow photos of David now?

I was going to say exactly the same. Two years ago there was a guard seated and patrolling guards who yelled at anyone even looking like taking a shot. Good to see it's finally been lifted.

As you can tell I've just caught up on this fabulous TR.

IST

I arrived into IST and transit pax headed through security screening. This was interesting as when I arrived from PRG there was no screening in or out of IST. Maybe the Schengen thing comes into play from there. And as I posted earlier, PRG were very thorough.

Technically I wasn’t transiting as I was planning to take advantage of TK’s hotel policy, but I wanted to visit the lounge briefly. I had a quick drink and got changed. I then put my suitcase into the storage area and headed back to the passport control area with just my backpack, where I was quickly processed. I had previously got a Turkish visa to make sure this step was possible.

Once pat immigration and through the luggage area I exited airside. At this point turn right and keep walking to the TK hotel desk.

Nov 12 TK hotel desk-3.jpg

I handed over my boarding passes (TK345 just flown and TK60 about to fly). They checked that I was in-fact eligible and then asked me to wait until my name was called. To be eligible you need to have a J connection of more than 7 hours or a Y connection of more than 10. And this must be the shortest time possible, as if there is another flight departing earlier, reducing the transit time, then the hotel is not permitted. There is a lot of info in the FlyerTalk TK hotel thread.

I chatted to a Spanish gentleman while we waited for our names to be called. His flight had been cancelled, so he had a 24 hour wait! Half an hour later and I was being escorted to a minivan which was to take me to the Polat Renaissance Hotel, about 15 minutes from the airport. I checked in and was given a club twin double room, with full club lounge access. This is part of TK's arrangement with the hotel.

Nov 12 IST hotel-2.jpg

I spotted a few shops on the way to the hotel that I intended to visit, but by the time I had showered and had a bit of a nap, the lounge was open for dinner. A pleasant lounge with a reasonable selection of things to eat and drink. I stayed for about an hour and then back to my room. The van was due to collect me at 2300 so I had another snooze in front of the television. This is a very civilised way to while away the hours between flights.

Just before 2300 the van arrived and we headed back to the airport. I had a great discussion* with the driver about the merits of TK's hotel policy and that he had been working for them for ages. At one point we paused as he showed me the little shop where he used to work, and now his wife and daughter work. We would have stopped in to meet them, but the shop was closed and his house was a bit too far away.

He dropped me at the departure area and we said our farewells.*

I already had my BP so it was straight through passport control and the security screening and back to the lounge to have a sample of the food on offer (their grilled chicken is fabulous) and to collect my suitcase. The gate TK60 was to depart from was 303. I know from previous experience that this a bus departure gate, so I headed there an hour before departure time. I was there but a few minutes before the bus pulled up and the scrum formed to board. When there is a plane at the gate in IST, PB works a treat; when it is a bus, decorum goes out the window.

Once the bus was crammed with pax we set off for the aircraft. Now I have bussed to planes before, but this seemed to go for such a distance I think our plane was actually in Greece. We had to wait awhile on the bus until there was staff at the bottom of the stairs before we were let out. But soon enough I was climbing the front steps in order to turn left!

*I cannot speak any Turkish and the driver could speak not a word of English, so the conversation content is all speculation.
