26 hour layover in Shanghai (PVG) - hotel suggestions?

My sister in on an awkward flight schedule in May - Arrives SYD-PVG at 18:25 then connection PVG-HEL is 20:55 the following day. Unfortunately they are reward seats and nothing else works so we are stuck with it.

What is a recommended hotel close to the airport (as I am guessing curling up in a corner wouldn't play) and what transport is available?
It's also a QF incoming flight - does QF arrange the 72/144 hour Visa needed or is this to be arranged direct? There's conflicting advice out there so hoping experience here trumps the Interwebs.

You tell the airline at check-in that you intend to use the 72/144 hour TWOV, complete the TWOV arrival card upon arrival and present it at passport control alongside onward tickets and hotel arrangements.


In case you are not familiar with getting around in China, I suggest

• Ensure you having mobile roaming prior to arrival. Gmail and other social media is not accessible in China otherwise.
• Print out your documents to present for TWOV.
• Install and set up WeChat
• Set up WeChat Pay and/or Alipay and add a bank card

If you feel inclined you can also stay closer to the city. The maglev will take 7mins to get you closer to the city center. It's the only commercially running maglev in the world so that might be a reason to take it in of itself. The journey on the normal metro will take around 30 mins. I believe the trip itself is 50 RMB (about $10 AUD).

Airport hotels tend to be a bit pricier imo than the ones near the maglev station. Get either Alipay or wechat pay (i used alipay myself) setup beforehand. EVERYTHING goes through that, if you want a Didi, transport metro, pay for anything all through that.

Personally I'd suggest going around to have a look at the city during that transit. Be prepared to put backpacks on xray machines when you go onto any subway and enter the airpot (not as stringent as main airport security check).

For Visa, 72 transit is fine, make sure you have your onwards flight and hotel printed as it's annoying to get wifi at PVG. Roaming gets aroud the great firewall of china.

For that period of time I would suggest Maglev to Longyang Rd then Subway Line 2 to East Nanjing Rd exit 2 and walk about 200mtrs to what was Sofitel Hotel and is now Radisson Collection Hyland - hotel is dated but cheap and it's right on East Nanjing Rd walking street.

Great place to stroll down to Bund at night and see it in all it's glory - abundance of restaurants close by - she can also get off at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Subway stop 2 stops before Longyang Rd on her return and spend a couple hours picking up bargains in the fake market.
