As it's a "MasterCard" I did find it strange that I was unable to withdraw at some ATMs in Japan with that logo in the last few days.

I heard a few times that Japan has a very strange ATM system, where a lot of ATMs would only accept local cards, even when they bear Visa / Plus / MasterCard / Cirrus logos. You have to find specific ATMs which take international cards.

I did wonder what would have happened if they had not been able to contact me before any subsequent withdrawals.

Block your account???

IME they've not actually bore the logos aforementioned, and simply have the local banks logos on them.

There are moer than enough 711 and Post Office ATMs which accept foreign cards to make this a non issue in Japan.
I had at least one 7/11 ATM reject my card, at Osaka Station I think.

Last Saturday I entered an ATM room at Kyoto Railway Station.

  • IIRC, It had 11 ATM's. It was busy and I had to queue at each machine I tried.
  • Of these only 4 had English options - all 4 had M/C symbols.
  • Most I tried rejected the Wizard, English ones showing something like "Card not accepted"
  • One seemed to be going OK, chucked a wobbly and went into a seeming sulk with "Out of Service" on its screen.
  • Eventually, about the 8th last gave me some ¥ :D.

The whole process took about ¼ hour - SWMBO wondered what I was doing. :-|

Most of our Aussie cards will only work at Post Offices, and get this, they only open business hours (but it's an ATM?) ...

I always have this problem in Japan. Up in Hokkaido, in Niseko, you have to catch a bus to a place called Kutchan to get money out. Everyone does it, it's called the ATM bus haha!

They are very strict on foreign money, I guess they want to control and see what's going on with foreigners / aliens.

Japan is a very much cash-centric country, so carrying Yen is always a must.

Admittedly it does take some getting used to carrying around 100k-200k of cash on you (or at least into the country anyway), then handing them over in 10k or 20k lots to pay for stuff. You also end up with a lot of Yen coins - useful for paying for the subway, but otherwise really, really annoying!

Not just post offcies, 7/11 atms also work, as do most Citibank ones. Additionally, the odd atm works too such as in VenusFort and other large shopping malls.

I also found a higher rate of CC acceptance than I had expected, but I would never count on it. Always kept 20-30 thousand yen on hand in case.

Well there's this informative post off another forum (zzzzz, OCAU):

That's why I'm curious if anyone has had any real life experiences yet since the changes. Also there's a new site to sign up, but I can't post it yet due to my post count, but just Google it.

Found this forum today, well done all of you for all the informative posts.

Although it sounded from these last few posts that I may have been several weeks late in applying for a Wiz MC, I did the deed today & applied online.

So I can answer that yes they are still available - I filled out the fairly sparse details about contact, employment and drivers licence - and yes this is apparently enough proof of ID - and within about 30 seconds received approval.

There was no option to choose a level of credit - I got given $8000 even though my annual income is<30k (!!!).

I too had questions about the possibly revised fee schedule - as has been pointed out, the info on the website seems to have changed (I will have to take others word on that as my first look at it was today).

So I called the toll free number - and yes got to talk with someone whose first language is probably hindu but spoke english very well - and was told that the fee structure had not changed in any way since the takeover.

I know that call centre operators dont always have the correct info, so now Im just waiting to see what info comes with the card (that Im *really* hoping takes less than 10 business days to get here as Im flying out on the 12th!).

Im planning on using the Wiz MC + my Visa while OS but before I found this thread I was about to go for the ANZ travelcard - anyone had anything to do with that one?

Hey guys, been reading here for a while and its you guys that informed me about Wizard and their pretty handy card :)

I'll be in Germany for 6 months and i'm leaving in just over a week! I got my Wizard card in preparation. Am i right in saying that when i transfer via bPay, i use their billercode (150615) and then i can use my credit card number as the Acc Number? I haven't received a statement in the mail yet so i don't know my account number!

Also, from what i've read here, i can cash advance $1000 per day up to my credit limit for the statement month. Say i put $4000 in credit, and i cash advance $5000, will i be charged interest on the $1000 over, or on the whole $5000?

Thanks guys! :D

Edit: Anyone here with remember what the ATM fees are like in germany? I know Wizard doesn't charge them, but i'm afraid most ATM machines will charge me directly.

No, you dont use the number on the credit card as yr acct number - I got the card & the info all together in the mail, & the acct number is slightly different (mine has 2 digits different).

I got my card within about 6 business days from online application (scarily easy, but also handy as it was 2 days before departure), you then have to call them & activate the card, & dont forget to set it up for overseas use.

Ive been using mine for about a week now in London, its too easy, there are many atms here that dont charge a fee, the only thing is it takes a few days to see your transactions through your online account portal.

cheers

Thanks mate! I'll dig around for that letter. Typical, the stuff i haven't filed away is the stuff that i need, so hopefully i can find it!

Yeah, it took me just over a week and a half including the ID check at AusPost to get mine. The pin took another week after the card to arrive!

Great, hopefully its the same case in Germany. Yeah, the few days of delay before showing online means that i will have to put more in as a buffer zone, don't want to overdraw and get charged for cash advance!

Don't worry, pay on your CC number if you do not have your documentation - it may take an extra day or two to show up but it works fine.

Exactly what I was about to say. It will work, but just takes a little bit longer.

With all due respect when I BPAY from CBA to Wizard I use the credit card number (not account number as I do not carry the account number with me everywhere) and I have never had a issue with the BPAY arriving into the Wizard account within 2 days depending on the time of the day of the BPAY....

Changes in Wizard Clear Advantage?

Regarding some of the posts re: changes in the description of Wizard MasterCard I would also like to clarify the issue of the annual fee. It appears that the previous description of the card (see below) has been modified and no longer includes the word "Ever". That appears to be a clear strategy to pave the way to introducing an annual card fee. Could someone please clarify whether there are any references in the current terms & conditions of the card that would allow them to introduce the fee? If so, from what date would the cut-off for older and new customers occur? Could someone with older version of the T&C copy and paste and relevant info on no annual fee?

I know it's a boring question but I would like to ensure that I won't be charged anything for this card before I apply for it.

Cheers

No annual fee. Ever.
4.99% interest for six months on transferred balances.
No fees for ATM withdrawals, cash advances or overseas purchases.
18.49% rate on purchases and cash advances
Up to 55 days interest free.
Apply online and get a decision in minutes.

Will I ever be charged an annual fee on this product?
No, not at all.

Hi guys I've got a couple of scenarios that I want to run by as I'm new to the credit card world.

1) I top up the card so it is now in credit $2000. I make a $500 purchase and use the Wizard card as a credit card (not cash advance). At the end of the month the card balance is $1500? and no fees charged?

2) I top up the card so it is now in credit $2000. I make a $500 withdrawal from an ATM (cash advance). Still no fees charged as the card was in credit?

Yes...

Yes...

Given the recent re-emerging questions I think it is time for this to re-surface ..
==================================================

-1. Currency rate used after the sale of the Wizard brand..
26/May 149.48EUR, they charge 266.36AUD, means 1EUR=1.7819AUD used.
according to yahoo finance, rate on that day was 1EUR=1.7821AUD,
so it is about 0.6% charge, which is still good as gold....

0. New applications ?

This card is still available, See here: http://www.wizardclearadvantage.com.au/

Here is the revised guide , :p

Benefits of this card :

1. No annual fee, no overseas ATM fee charged by Wizard (although the ATM owner may charge a fee), no cash advances fee (home and overseas).
2. Generally it has the best exchange rate available for purchases and cash advances.
3. MasterCard acceptance, it has worked in countries such as NZ, USA, UK, Italy, France, Netherlands , Japan, Korea, HK, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, China and the list goes on.

However, their customer services is considered bad, so always have a second source of funds ready for backup use when overseas.

Applying and getting ready for cash advance :
Apply through their web-site, after you have got the card and the pin, you need to go to their website and download the form in order to withdraw more than $1000AUD in case (not sure if this is still the case?).

How to use:
To avoid paying any interest for cash advance it is important that you put the card to credit before doing cash advance, and always remember how much you have put in and taken out. For example, the card limit is $3,000, and you put in another $2,000, the total credit available (for purchases) will become $5,000, and the amount of cash available to withdrawn interest free is $2,000. Because I mostly use this card for cash advances overseas I usually do not use it in Australia. (except sometime ago when JetStar take $100 off if paying by MasterCard !)

Timing of Cash advances and Purchases to avoid paying interest:
[Mel_traveller :However, the card will not distinguish between cash advances and purchases for the $2000 extra you have paid in.
So for example, if you pay, on day one, a hotel bill for $2500, then take out $50 as a cash advance, that cash advance will start to accrue interest immediately. (The card does not take the $2500 hotel bill out of your original $3000 credit limit, and take the $50 out of the additional $2000 you paid in before you left home!)
Users of the card will need to ensure that at the time of taking out a cash advance, that cash advance is coming entirely out of a credit (positive)balance, which includes considering any purchases that may have been made.]

One wise way is to use two cards, one for cash advances only and another for purchases only.

How to put the card to credit
The easiest method is to use bpay, the biller code and the account no. will appear in the statement , remember the account number for bpay is NOT the same as the credit card number ! If you need to put the card to credit before the first statement arrives, call customer service and see if they can give you your bpay account number. [serfty : Just one comment with this; if you do not have a statement handy or otherwise do not know your account number and you want to make a payment/reload anyway, the actual card number will suffice. Processing might take a day or so longer. The bpay biller code is: 150615 ]

Limits on daily cash withdrawals :
The daily limit for cash withdrawals is about $1000AUD, or the foreign exchange equivalent.

Gotcha on limits with cash withdrawals:
There is a gotcha based on your credit limit that also limits the amount you can take out. It's actually a max of your credit limit per length of time it takes between you taking the money out, and the transaction showing in the transaction history on the wizard website. This length of time varies based on a lot of factors, and the only way to check it is to either log in, or attempt to take more money out, according to Wizard.

Exchange rate:
Over time, for me it always provides the best exchange rate available, sometimes the spread is as low as 0.3% from the real exchange rate (compared with at least 2.5% for other credit cards) , which can be checked form the www.oanda.com/convert/fxhistory site. However if the currency fluctuates a lot the spread can be widen however in stable times the rate is always the best.

How to use the ATM:
Find an ATM with the MasterCard sign on it, select credit card and choose the amount to withdraw. In most cases ATMs do not incur a use fee, however in some ATMs (for example the ones in Wal-Mart) they do, but they will tell you before you proceed.

Online facilities:
For your deposits / payments to the card it will take about 2 working days to appear on the web. For purchases and cash advances to appear on the web will take longer, usually about 3-4 working days.

Beware of rip off merchants:
If you use this card (or any other card) for purchases in overseas currencies, sometimes the merchant (including on-line merchants such as Tiger Airways when book from SG website for departures not from Australia) will give you an “option” (or “no-commission conversion”) to debit the card in your home currency (AUD), almost certainly at a much worse exchange rate (usually at least 2.5% worse off). Always insist them to debit the card using the local currency of where you make your purchases, for example in US, use USD. The exchange rate provided by Wizard Clear Advantage is almost certainly better than those rates offered by them.

Should probably edit the cash advance limit, as multiple posters have now confirmed that they withdrew over their monthly limit in cash while away. I can also confirm this from Japan last year.

um... let's be more clear on this.

If your limit is 2,000 and you put in another 2,000,
you can withdraw up to 4,000 during the same billing cycle,
this is the normal case...

Or do you mean you/they (with limit 2,000) put in another 2,000 and can withdraw more than 4,000 during the same billing cycle ?
if yes, by how much ?
