Many many posts in this thread about card cancellations and threats of cancellation when anyone has put the card over $2K into credit.

In my experince, ATM charges do vary (I have seen from $0 to $2.5) but are flat rate per withdrawal. You be advised of the charge before you agree to proceed.

ISTR when I was using my card in the US last year if you withdraw from Chase ATM's there is no fee.....

Haven't been back through the quotes but I don't recall anyone actually having their card cancelled, nor a specific amount mentioned by GE except for the above with his $8k. I have a card that has been in credit for now around 20-24 months and is normally at 2k credit, but been up 80% of limit no issues. I think you just need to be sensible.

Exactly what I do (but with an ING Direct Orange Everyday account which has only a $2.50 ATM fee and almost-live exchange rates like 28 Degrees)

The Citibank Plus transaction account is also listed as being free of overseas transaction charges and fees, but I haven't been overseas since the change to test it out!

Right about to head off to USA as dollar dropping :(
Anyways check list.
1. Card in credit and called to notify OS.
2. Top up of card via BPAY takes a day.
3. USA Chase machine, cause LAX Airport and Vegas charge fee, machine will tell before withdrawl.
4. Have travellers cheques(just a few)
5. Backup bank direct debit card take.

Any other pearls of wisdom to add\check off.

0. Call to notify OS.
1. Card in credit <> 2. Top up of card via BPAY (takes a [working] day [or three] - I allow 2).
3. All [USA] machines will tell before withdrawl.
4. Have travellers cheques(just a few)
5. Backup bank direct debit card take. [Good idea]

Just one - where possible keep 1 card and some cash on you (some in your wallet/bag, some on you), and leave your backup along with some cash & cheques at the hotel (either room safe or safety box).

Right in LA and both LAX and Disneyland had $2.00 fee and rate was at LAX .98 but 1.02 on xe??
In LA fee is $3.00??? what the?

tried 3 different banks including chase.

the rate you were given of .98... does that correspond with the lowest rate of the day proceeding your transaction? Just interesting to test as I thought that was the rate applied... (happy to be wrong!)

Well seems that my money credit is on the website but not showing on the atm balances in USA????
Giving me a heart attack...but fellow traveller convincing me that did not show on their balance either?
Currently in Las Vegas and a Ralph's want $5 fee to use!

As it is a credit card, I do not believe the balance shows up on ATMs, nor have I ever seen it on the receipt. I don't check that frequently though, so maybe it is just the ATMs I use.

Edit: probably wrong on this, and more likely just unobservant, apparently...

My experience withdrawing money via Westpac ATM's over the past 2 weeks is that it has shown the balance for me. I can't remember what it's done when I've withdrawn overseas though and all my receipts for such are back home in London.

I believe this to be the case - I have always checked my balance online.

overseas I have never received a balance on a withdrawal slip.

In the past I have been able to request my balance from foreign ATMs, but I believe the balance it shows is the available 'cash limit', translated into foreign currency. So if you put your account into credit with more than your cash withdrawal limit, the whole amount won't be reflected in an ATM balance enquiry.

Just to mention the site has been down the last couple of days but now back up!

I'm confused with my latest statement as I thought when AU dollar was $1.03 to US that I would come out on top but my statement shows the opposite?

ie:
16 - Nov 19 - Nov HOLIDAY INN EXPRES HAWTHORNE CA 389.87AU
390.88 USD Rate: 0.997416 .

25 - Nov 29 - Nov MARRAKECH NEW YORK NY 658.47AU
636.41 USD Rate: 1.034663 .

Plant the $AUD continues to move all over the place so I am not surprised that there would be one great day and one weak day to pay those hotel charges.
My partner went to London recently and mostly exchanged at 0.66 for the pound so 28 degrees was a real winner for her latest trip. She is of course very tinny with her timing!

It will be the check out date that the rate is calculated on.

Plugging the quoted figures into xe.com the first one is good:
