Having an expensive US trip coming up, am I allowed to make a deposit into the 28er before travel over and above my limit? I am aware that I can't use that for cash withdrawals sadly.

I don't want to apply for any more (better) cc at the moment.

You can use it for cash withdrawals, but you will simply have to pay a fee for withdrawing that against your credit. If you remain in credit after the "withdrawal", I would at least think that means you wouldn't have to start paying interest on the cash advance (viz. if you "withdrew" into debit).

I believe you can make a deposit (viz. "pay your card") so that it goes into credit. I've done it before (usually only by a small amount, e.g. $100 or so) even after the card became uneconomical as a cash withdrawal facility.

No real reason IMO to do it unless you are going to spend over your credit limit overseas and can't make a payment in the middle of your trip.

Before you leave on your trip, you would do well to call 28 Degrees and tell them where you are travelling.

Yes thanks, I'm thinking I don't want to go over my limit which would not be hard with a month of hotel bills. Yes, I always call 28 D to let them know. I always find them polite and knowledgable, perhaps that's because the card is so simple.

I'm cutting down on enquires on my credit history and if I apply for an increase that's what will happen. It's quite alarming when you see how many enquires there are on the credit history if one wants to wait a while before making yet another application for a replacement card (now that the WOW card) is limited, with a bonus. That's a convoluted sentence, but you get the menacing I hope.

My limit is pretty good, I just don't want to be concerned about it during the trip.

Why not just increase ur limit?

No need to panic. If your credit history is in good standing the number of enquiries is irrelevant. I know for a fact. And yes I know my situation could be different to others.

Credit card companies are falling over themselves to offer me credit. They even go out of their way to offer me long term low percentage balance transfers.

I have had 28 Degrees credit card in credit many times. Never had an issue.

If you are concerned are you not able to setup a future BPAY payment to bring your balance down when you are overseas?

It's always a good idea to establish the pattern of using this card for the purpose it is intended - ie a credit card, before loading up with cash to put it into credit. Otherwise they have been known to cancel the card as it is being used as a debit card. I suspect this is less of a problem to them once they started charging the overseas transaction fees at atm's.

Agree, and also, I don't really see the need to pre-pay your credit card unless you plan to spend more than your limit in a single transaction. If for example you have a $5k limit and spend $2k here and $1k there, just BPay as you go.. you won't get close to your limit, and the funds will arrive a day or two later on the card.

Why don't you use a citibank plus for cash withdrawals and just use the 28 deg for purchases?

I don't have Citi anything at the moment and won't be applying for anything else for the next 6 months, when I will probably look for bonuses. I am resting my credit history.:p When / if the credit score recognises what a model citizen I am on paying everything on the due dates, am fabulously rich and own many millions of $ of property, it may balance out my multiple cc applications.

The NYC hotels are terribly expensive and I don't bpay. Thanks for all the suggestions, I will call them and discuss this. I use the card for a few other things too between trips so that they don't see me only using o/s. I think that s a bit unfair.

I don't think you fully get the gist of what vitagen suggested. The Citibank Plus account is NOT a credit card account, its just a normal bank account where you can deposit/withdraw money, bpay others, transfer to others, etc(think a normal transaction account with Westpac, NAB, etc..). You won't need to touch your credit history in order to get a Citibank Plus account, and then use a Citibank Plus debit card to withdraw money from ATMs overseas fee-free.....

Citibank Plus is a debit account. Shouldn't have any effect at all on credit rating.

Of course, the Citibank Plus is really only useful over the 28 Degrees for obtaining cash, which hitherto is mainly only useful for tipping or bar transactions, as well as the obligatory transactions which won't be well suited to credit. I definitely wouldn't use the Citibank Plus as the security payment card when checking into a hotel - no way Jose.

Oh ok I didn't realise. I will look into the Citibanl Plus jus for cash at the ATM. Thanks ghostdunks and anot01.

Yes my credit history is good, but looking at the Veda file a couple of weeks ago, the descriptor said someone with good history may default in the next 12 months, which In theory may be right, but it does not apply to me. I'll just sit the cc dance out for a bit now. In the meantime, I plan to cancel the Amex Blacks before the due date.

I think people place way too much importance on what's shown in Veda.

I haven't seen mine in a while. Time to have a look for a laugh.

Why not bpay ?
I top up the 28 card all the time on the road.. easy as ...

I only just got my head around this at the start of this year - have had a Citi 'plus' card for years. I always used it like a credit card and thought it was one, I originally got it with a 0% BT promotion ages ago when I bought a car on an Amex charge card, then BT'd to this and life was grand for about a year (whee!!) - but its more like a line of credit than a traditional cc. I don't do any sort of day-to-day banking with it and its never in credit. I have a credit limit and can use it in every way like a VISA CC, but... its not a CC (??).

Used to use the 28D card which I'd put into credit first in order to get access to 'cheap' local cash, but now thats finished I'm struggling to think of a use for the 28D card and will probably axe it.

Yes, me too - its all a bit weird. As more and more of the benefits attached to the old staple cards are being withdrawn or modified they (the CC companies) must be feeling the pinch of lost customers ... or something ...???
