28 Degree cash loading before travel

Used to use the 28D card which I'd put into credit first in order to get access to 'cheap' local cash, but now thats finished I'm struggling to think of a use for the 28D card and will probably axe it.

I use the 28D for expenses - hotel authorisations, hotel bills, food, restaurants and get the x days free.

The CitiPlus is used solely for cash withdrawals.
You ideally don't want hotel preauths against a debit card as they can take time to fall off

I only just got my head around this at the start of this year - have had a Citi 'plus' card for years. I always used it like a credit card and thought it was one, I originally got it with a 0% BT promotion ages ago when I bought a car on an Amex charge card, then BT'd to this and life was grand for about a year (whee!!) - but its more like a line of credit than a traditional cc. I don't do any sort of day-to-day banking with it and its never in credit. I have a credit limit and can use it in every way like a VISA CC, but... its not a CC (??).

I don't think you have the card we are all talking about then. Our cards are debit cards and will not function without cash in the account.

Sounds like you may have a ready-credit card.

Does your card have a big "DEBIT" on the front of it?

What are you on about? The 28D card is a CREDIT card & the Citi + is a DEBIT card - Cunicor has both, but is confused about his Citi +.

I'm replying to the quoted post only. I know exactly what I'm talking about, and yes, I have both.

Moopere is saying he has used his citi card like a credit card but this isn't possible. It won't function without money in it,

Yes, it does. Always confused the heck out of me from the day I got it. I've rung them several times about this as I was, at the time, wanting a credit card, the explanations varied a bit but my take away in the end is that its some weird line-of-credit thing thats looks and smells like a CC but isn't actually one - its so bizzare. Anyway, last time I used it in HKG I was surprised at how cheaply I was able to access cash from an ATM ...

Definitely good value on oseas cash. I would wonder if it is linked to a redi-credit account then. About the only way I can see it working without being loaded up.

I meant Moopere (got the posters mixed up). The Citibank Plus card does not necessarily have to be in credit - from the terms & conditions
"Citibank Plus The following provisions apply to making withdrawalsfrom a Citibank Plus Transaction Account and a CitibankPlus Linked Savings Account:
If there are insufficient cleared funds in your CitibankPlus Transaction Account; or if there are sufficientcleared funds in your Citibank Plus Linked SavingsAccount, we may at our discretion process the withdrawalby overdrawing your Citibank Plus Transaction Account.
Debit interest will be charged using the prevailing debitbalance interest rate determined by us. "

Yes, me too - its all a bit weird. As more and more of the benefits attached to the old staple cards are being withdrawn or modified they (the CC companies) must be feeling the pinch of lost customers ... or something ...???

The problem with loading the 28 Degree Mastercard into a positive balance is that if your card gets stolen and misused, GE is only required to cover the money up to your credit limit, it won't cover the loaded up amount. Or so the chap at GE told me when I enquired about this a few years back.
Regards,
Renato

My 28D was skimmed in USA April 2015 but thankfully I was in negative balance at the time, however I can confirm this was also the advice I received at that time as the operator noticed I had done this in the past. As a side note it was maybe 10 days before I got my few hundred bucks back!
