I've spent way too much time looking at reward flights to the US, wanting J with no luck.
Thought maybe I'll just go economy with this sale, but while its only 60,000 points return, the taxes are around ~$450. Full price booking is around $1350.

Seems like I'd be better off saving my points for a future Europe trip.

Hi, language police here.

Way too many people calling surcharges, taxes. If you must call them taxes please do so with quotation marks, as in “taxes”. This is a term the airlines want you to use. Better to use term “surcharges”. Or “taxes plus airline surcharges”. Or “taxes plus airline extortion fee”. :p:D

Just completed a booking for mid-April then realised the promo is for travel from May 1 o_O

I did notice the surcharges for this particular route have come down slightly...interesting.

Personally I prefer 'taxes plus airline extortion fee' as I think it is the most accurate!

I'm assuming this discount wouldn't apply to the QF flights on a OneWorld Award ticket?
I thought about that, but consider it unlikely since you can't have a oneworld award unless it's booked on at least two oneworld carriers other than Qantas.

I decided to go for it with Emirates from Madrid to ADL in August. 42k pts + $400 charges, as the o/w was $1450. Site showed availability through passenger details and then stated unavailable through the carrier and to start over. I tried it on many dates in August and even for much later in the year with always the same result. Simply could not get it. Maybe a system glitch, but it feels more like they were trying to market something wrongly. Anybody else manage to get a reservation on an Emirates flight during this offer?

I would suggest you call.

There are many reports of online reward availabilty failing, but couls be bookied woth a call. If you can book it with a call, the assisted award fee should be waived due to rhe web issues

Found I'd somehow managed to book a Classic Reward using Points and Pay (not sure how) so not eligible for the discount though only paid the standard 45000 pts on one way leg US to Oz.
