Valuations on points are like elbows - everyone's got one.

But given the market price is 1 cent per point (for those that elect to sell) that is that the price floor I use for valuations. In situations where you can exceed that, you're ahead of the curve but new players with penchants for toasters should never go below 1 cent. In the SYD-BNE example, that price per point to me represents outstanding value and I'm not sure why it was singled out as anything but that.

Actually I've got two. As do most people.

And that is applicable to valuations as well. An emergency trip where a Y reward flight is available may yield a lower rate of return than a well planned J trip in the future. But it all depends on what you need and when you need it.

I value points according to how much they cost in the market (not directly from the airline). Last time I checked Avios were 1.65c and QF 1c.

I do agree that valuation of QF poInts can vary depends on how many points one needs to burn in calendar year as there are certain limitations to “family” transfers.

Yes we all value points and airfares differently.

e.g. SYD-BKK economy return is ~$600 while business class return is ~$3000. I'd be silly to value my use of points with what the airline values business class as that is the not the true value of a slightly better meal and slightly bigger seat. I may pay $1,200 for business class and at a stretch maybe $1500 but all that does is keep the same value for points whether redeeming economy or business class.

Last minute airfares should be a cost effective way to get value from points but I can't get it to work for flights in 2 weeks for BNE-CNX via SYD.

Fair enough - you value mainly on purchase cost of points. In the normal scheme of things, at least for me, points cannot be purchased at 1c.

I value more on Burn "savings" - that's why I like the woollies rewards where I burn for much more than the cost of earn ($10 per 870).

Hi There seems to be a bug ?? in SYD - Broome in Sept. There are some direct SYD to Broome flights and some overnight via PER or MEL but the discount of 30% varies in points or not at all. Not sure if the system does not allow for direct flights in the discount or via Per or MEL flights involve overnight and hence the discount does not apply.

If overnighting in PER or MEL, it will price as separate awards SYD-PER and PER-BME, etc. It's always like this for domestic awards. So the discount would be 30% off the sum of the two awards. It will be cheaper if not overnighting as it prices as a through-booking. The cheapest option will be the direct BME-SYD flight but there are only a few Saturdays in September with that flight available as a Y award.

BTW, I visited Broome in September a couple of years ago and loved it! Enjoy

Looks like I'm finally emptying my points account. It will probably take me a year or so before I can clear my other account with another airline. I used to hold points for a long time but it just doesn't seem to make much sense given the more or less regular devaluations and it's a bunch of asset held up and I have to use cash to pay for something where that cash can be used/invested elsewhere. These days, it's more like trading a commodity - buy if it costs me less than 1c per dollar, and sell if it pays me more than 1c per dollar. Most of my redemptions are in economy - there a lot of situations where points are of good value (at least 2-3c per dollar).

Just book a OOL-SYD ticket for trip in May paying 5600 points plus $39 tax .

If you look at QF cash price of $180 for the same flight you think you got a good value of 2.5c but when you look at Virgin price of $110 your value go down to 1.25c .

Seems a lot considering JQ airfares are regularly on sale for $39 anyway. But then if you need that particular QF flight that would otherwise be $180 then I 'spose it's not bad actually. Better than Greyhound by a mile lol

JQ and QF flight is a big different consider you got food , bag and points . i think it fair to compare price between QF and VA

0. Demand exceeds supply for these. If they were willing to multiply the number of business classic reward seats on some routes supply would still fall far short of the demand.
