Doing a search tonight and noticed that there is 30% off points + pay?
or is it dynamic "point pricing" at play?
The Qantas Points required to redeem a Points Plus Pay - Flight change with demand and can differ between bookings, even for the same itinerary. The points quoted in the Points Plus Pay - Flight booking processes are only valid when quoted at the time of booking. If you delay your booking or do not proceed to make your booking at that time, the points quoted may change. There is no fixed relationship between the price charged by the applicable airline for a seat and the number of points required to redeem a Points Plus Pay - Flight.

and yes you are right the 30% off points banner has shown up

9308DA13-11F3-4911-A262-387E73287FA0.jpeg

what they did say in the investor presentation was
slide 63 Diversifying redemption offering with smaller, more attainable rewards for more frequent engagement

Redemption growth driven by expansion and diversification of Loyalty’s proposition
slide 64 Maintaining strong value airline rewards complemented with more options to use points on flights
Continued innovation in expanding flight reward product suite to meet member demand

this does seem an UNANNOUNCED points burn option

Yes. It's a promotion that will run until 30 June 2023.

It's briefly mentioned here:

interesting

hasn't seemed to be much fanfare - gosh more fanfare in the run up to State of Origin tonight - QLD barely ahead aha

that said, has the Classic Rewards points for Business flights been increased?

No changes to Classic Rewards.

The promotion hasn't been announced yet because I believe it officially starts tomorrow.
yeah, i was probably not realising its heading onto 4 years since the last "devaluation"

There actually is: I think the value varies between zilch and bugger-all :-)

But seriously I think there is a range they use. From memory, value of the points are calculated at around 0.5-0.6 cents apiece for Points Plus Pay.

so the cheapest paying option vs points spend on paid tic vs points spend on rewards tic

$129 Melbourne - Adelaide tic was 21,500 but with 30% off is 15,050 LESS points earn 800 with 10SCs (110 points per $)
while classic rewards is 8,000 plus $41 with zero SCs (unless points club) (91 points per $) (8,000 / (129-41))
$199 Adelaide - Sydney tic was 31,667 but with 30% off is 23,217 LESS points earn 800 with 10SCs (112.6 points per $)
while classic rewards is 12,000 plus $45 with zero SCs (78 points per $) (12,000 / (199-45))

$191 Adelaide - Kangaroo Island was 31,717 but with 30% is 22,202 LESS points earn 800 with 10 SCs (112 points per $)
while classic rewards is 8,000 plus $38 with zero SCs (52 points per $) (8,000 / (191-38))

$150 Sydney - Melbourne tic was 24,872 but with 30% off is 17,411 LESS points earn 800 with 10 SCs (110.7 points per $)
while classic rewards is 8,000 plus $41 with zero SCs (73 points per $) (8,000 / (150-41))
$389 Sydney - Perth tic was 64,834 but with 30% off is 45,384 LESS NB1,450 0R WP 2,900 with 20 SCs (113 / 109 points per $)
while classic rewards is 18,000 plus $45 with zero SCs (52 points per $) (18,000 / (389-45))

this suggests the larger the cash fare, the preference is classic rewards
on the low priced routes, the points plus pay option with the SCs might tip people into that option.

brief UPDATE
$159 Adelaide - Sydney tic was 26,500 but with 30% off is 18,550 LESS points earn 800 with 10SCs (111.6 points per $)
while classic rewards is 12,000 plus $45 with zero SCs (105 points per $) (12,000 / (159-45))

SO THAT swings these cheaper fares into Points plus pay territory

Another thing to consider though is the flexibility on the ticket. Classic Flight Rewards have much lower change fees and can be easily cancelled for a modest cancellation fee.

sure

if you're confident of going on the dates you booked, and not too worried of the "chase" for status, this heads back to the problem plenty of punters have that after all that time of shopping groceries, I only got 20,000 points! so I may as well spend them for a "free trip"

So another question for the AFF Brains Trust

Was discussing with a mate yesterday his points and he was debating using his points to fly a friend to Sydney so the friend could see his relatives.

Given you can purchase a cash tic for a friend, (where classic rewards are restricted to a long list of relatives) can you use points plus pay to buy the tic for the friend?

I’m presuming Yes that it’s open ended unlike classic rewards options

Thanks in advance

From my understanding with the 'Red e-Deal' Points Plus Pay tickets that you don't get a points refund at all, all points are lost if you cancel the flights even weeks or months out? If this is the case it's really unfair.

Don't think this is targeted - they posted this on Friday in the Qantas Point Hacks group (but posted it too early so I think they took it down), so I'd say it's general.

And a side of

“We're committed to giving you more Classic Flight Reward seats to the places you want to go, at the times you want to fly. That's why we've added more Business and Economy reward seats on every flight to and from London and Rome during peak season.* That's thousands of additional reward seats in Business and Economy across June, July and August.‘

And here’s the pricing structure
