Hi all,

Myself and a friend will be in Hong Kong for 5 nights in January and are struggling to understand what would be the best accommodation seeing as the place is huge.

Max. budget of $2000 for the 5 nights total (this will rule out places like the peninsula, four seasons etc.) but ideally looking for somewhere with great location (easy walking distance to most areas) and wanted to get an understanding of where people have stayed. Most expensive place that we have thought would be awesome is Park Lane by Pullman. ~$1800.

Have seen causeway bay as having nice deals but unsure if that is a fair walking distance away from the centre of hong kong island and the ferry stop across to the mainland.

SOMEWHERE WITH AN AWESOME ROOFTOP BAR WOULD BE GREAT!! haha

Any and all tips welcome.
Thanks

Are you a member of any hotel loyalty groups ? Le Club Accor or the like as I see you have mentioned the Pullman.

No but my friend works for Accor so this is why these hotels could be the goods because of the discount provided (~50%).

But if there is a better located hotel that is not accor then we're open to ideas.

My go to hotel in Hongkong is the Conrad. Great hotel, great location over major shopping centre, and easy access to trains.
However if your friend is an Accor staff member and can get something like a 50% discount you may be better looking at the more upscale Accor hotels, of which there seem to be three.
Park Lane Pullman in Causeway Bay.
Novotel Century in Wanchai
Novotel Nathan Road Kowloon.

Some people , including myself like staying on the Island, others in Kowloon; its really your choice.

I would think the Pullman is more upscale, surrounded by shopping, ok for walking and eating, though lots of pedestrians, and close to MTR (train).
Second choice maybe Novotel Kowloon.

As far as walking goes its good to walk around an area, but not necessarily between areas. Therefore easy access to a MTR station is invaluable.

Hongkong is a great city, the well known attractions like the Peak, the ferries etc are all enjoyable.

$1800 sounds expensive ( was this pre-friends discount? ) I've just done a dummy booking for Jan '18 and can get anywhere from AUD $1300-1450

I guess it depends if the 50% off is based on the flexible rate.

I really like the Novotel Century Wan Chai. Good breakfast, nice gym and small rooftop pool and centrally located. But not a luxury hotel by any standard.

The cost of staying in HKG has pushed me away, and now prefer other destinations in China such as Beijing/Shanghai etc.
However, if staying in HKG, get any hotel close to the MTR, and you can be anywhere within a matter of minutes in any event.

No this was just a price I found online,

We have pre-booked Park Lane by Pullman for $500 each - really like the look of the rooftop bar but again am only going off the photos.
I believe its close to MTR too???

What's everyones thoughts on paying for the MTR? I was reading about a GoCard/Opal Card kind of set up they have?? is this the best way?

If you intend to use the MTR a lot during your stay an Octopus card will save you money. The octopus card can also be used on the Airport Express train. You can also purchase a 3-day tourist pass including a return trip on the Airport Express. That card is also an Octopus card and can be topped up to be used beyond the initial 72 hours on the MTR (the return Airport Express can be used for 30 days). I find the 3-day pass is not really worth it as you would need to travel extensively on the MTR network in the 72 hour period to actually save money.

The HKD50 deposit and any remaining balance on your Octopus card can be claimed at the service desk of the Airport station when exiting the airport train. I shoud also add that the octopus card can be used to pay taxi and buy things in shops with an Octopus reader (e.g. 7Eleven).

Interesting....

Wonder if that will be better getting now with the 20% discount attached.

I'd say it's worth it with the rebate. HKD280 will get you a return Airport express ticket (HKD205) and unlimited MTR travel for 72 hours for HKD25 (considering that you get HKD50 back when returning the card).

Also a little travel tip to save time. If the Express train is already boarding when you arrive at the Airport station, you can board the train and exchange your printed confirmation for the Travel Pass when you arrive at Kowloon or Hong Kong station. Just stop by the service desk before exiting the station.
