Just booking ahead some flights to MEL due to the $99 sale from CBR, noticed that they've loaded in some 717 flights now too.

Strangely enough that all the 717 flights are about $100 more expensive compared to the other flights on the same day.

Was looking at Feb.

717's to CBR was announced last month I think?

I guess they're a reduction in capacity, so prices will rise?

The 717s are Qantaslink not Qantas mainline. They seem to have slightly different pricing structures.

But on some other dates you can see some 717 flights at the $99 fare (not all flights!).

Edit to add:

CBR-MEL is certainly an interesting aircraft mix on some days! On 13 Jan 2014, CBR-MEL is opertated by Q.400, 717, 734, 738, 767 !!

Also you will notice by the time you get to the booking page, the QF15xx flight on the 717 isn't factored into the predicted amount of points possibly earnt, nor can you click to see the details of the fare.

Unless I'm missing something, the amount of points you earn doesn't vary by aircraft type ;)

Edit: Oh I see, it's not displaying online, but all that will show is that you earn 1000 points minimum :p

Great - I'm looking forward to flying the 717 again... Melbourne has missed it!!

My cousin is a pilot for Qantas and he told me 3 months ago that the 717 will replace all the old 734's on the Canberra route. With their new refurb they should be a hit.

Correct - that's been widely reported and announced already.

I agree that they will be warmly welcomed although I'm personally a little sad to see any fleet type retired... But I'm sure I'll get over it :)

If QF loads a fare for SYD-CBR it is the same whether it's QF operated by Qantaslink or QF operated by mainline. Just different availabilities on the different flights

Except for CBR based employees with J privileges where the number of J seats will be cut by 8 when compared with a 734 ...

Yes, it does seem to be the case now! But I remember many times booking MEL-CBR returns and the Qantaslink fares (on a Q.400) were a few dollars different to the Qantas mainline (for the same fare class). I don't think I imagined it ...

Is there an official start date when the 717 will come in? Might take a trip to Fairbairn and check it out.

How old are the 717s coming into the QF fleet? Production ceased in 2005 and didn't QF salvage these from the desert - so how much newer compared to the 734s they are retiring?

From memory they are some of the ex Air Tran or Midwest birds from the US. Stab in the dark but from memory 2004 series rings a bell - so a lot newer than the ex Impluse/****star ones.

First flight was only 1998, and I'm sure markis10 will have all the details, but the first J-config 717, VH-YQS was manufactured in 2004 and stored since 2011.

Also ex-MexicanaClick.

VH-NXE 2000
VH-NXO 2001
VH-NXQ 2001

Now I'm going to bed... but just search their rego's on Google.

The 737-400s joined Australian Airlines from about 1990. I took my first ever flight on one as an 8 year old that year.
