744 - J class, better upstairs or down?

Without going to the QF website to check the seat maps, istr it's rows 11,12,13, exit, 16,17,18.

I like 13 as it's the last row in front of the exit, which means everyone forward of you goes to the front toilet (predominately) and everyone behind goes to the rear toilet. Means less foot traffic walking past when you're sleeping.

Note for those CPAP users (not me but noticed when I was last in 16A the guy in 13A was using) there's power access at the wall near 13AB.

Ahh cool - fair enough.

I think I've always been in 16, except 1 time in 12, and sometimes get 11 pre-allocated before I change it.

Only time I didn't get UD, I was in 23, so never really had to consider a plan B for UD seating.

Obviously Zone A if available is the go (who would prefer a sky bed over a lie flat bed?) - although in seat power is better in the Skybeds I find.

I do agree with the logic of Serfty's (and others) comments but there is still the emotional tug towards the upper deck. It just feels more special...

Good point, Apple plugs don't fit into the power points in F/ Zone A.
I much prefer the upper deck 16 A/K if available, great window storage.
Even allowing for the power issues I would always pick Zone A on 4 class sold as 3, favourite seat downstairs 1A/K, bit busy at beginning due to wardrobe proximity, but super private in-flight and served first for dinner :D

I generally recommend the upper deck to as many people as I can. That increases the probability of 23 D or F being available for me, and 23 E being empty. Great to see so many people prefer the upper deck - continue to spread the word!

Last year I had a points upgrade confirmed to HKG and was pre-allocated 16K.

I quickly moved to 23D ...

Makes no difference, 744 IFE is generally disabled until after the seatbelt sign go off. (Unless you consider looking at a couple of choir kids sitting on a rock to be IFE.)

In a similar vein:

Everybody! Go for the lower deck, you'd hate 16A or K, I only sit there to punish myself! :p

Having travelled extensively in the UD of many an airline as a youngster, I find I'd rather be on the lower deck these days. The novelty has worn off, and I like being first off. :p

I understand the logic of 23D and F. I sat in 23F back in May MEL-LAX*. It may have been that particular flight, but I found it quite "busy". (I find the daytime flight to LAX the worst I do.) Unfortunately there was someone in 23E, who did "squeeze" past me on a couple of occasions. It probably didn't help that there were a few chatty types in the cabin too. :-|

I agree with samh004 it is nice to be off the plane first and that is usually my first preference, but I like 16A or K because there is a nice large space in front of me, I like the feeling of being away from it all and being able to "spread" my stuff out, using the top of the storage compartment. (Which, by the way is fab for my backpack too.) The UD of the humpy plane (I'm a 62A man with BA) almost makes me forget I'm stuck in a large metal cylinder...usually for an awfully long time!

(Incidentally one of the things I like about AFF is diversity. It is great that so many experienced flyers have varying preferences. [It is interesting that two of the most experienced opt for 23D/F...maybe I should give it another go] The only thing that really matters is that you get the seat you enjoy the most. Like paying for J or not I don't see a right or wrong)

* One of you 23D/F lovers must have got the upgrade to F so that I could get the upgrade to J!

If seating is available in the Forward cabin (in the nose) , I always choose that, otherwise its Row 16 upstairs.
