Another data point...

Just had a 16 segment DONE5 exJNB rated. It has one LHR stopover, and one AA transpacific segment. Transatlantic is on RJ.
Total XT = ZAR4745 (approx AUD630)
YQ= ZAR1057 (approx AUD140)
GB = ZAR309 (approx AUD41) ---> departing LHR-HEL.

Verdict: No fuel fines when transoceanic segments aren't AA (codeshare and metal), and more economical to limit O/D from the UK to short haul departures if you have to stopover in the UK. :)

ZAR50045 or approx AUD6652 AI.

edited to add:
For the sake of completeness here's the routing:
JNB
oSYD QF
oAKL QF
xSYD QF
oNRT QF
oSIN JL
xNRT AA (operated by JL)
oJFK AA
oMIA AA
oLAX AA
oYUL AA
oAMM RJ
oDXB RJ
oLHR BA
oHEL AY
xLHR AY
CPT AY (operated by BA)

I'm planning on using IB on my next DONE4 transatlantic. (Many people don't like them, but I have flown them a lot lately, and do like them. I also like MAD airport a lot) Wish I had thought more about my LHR departure on my current one. I am doing CPT-LHR-BCN(stop)-PAR(stop)-LHR(stop)-JFK. I could easily have made my LHR transit the LHR stopover instead...

Hmms, that expains this then:
Interestingly, there appears to have been NO YQ charged on the AA LONE4's I purchased back in March.

58.70UB 21.30HR 16.60SG 34.00HK 25.20TS 21.00SW 5.00XF
We do not have any AA intercontinental flights on our itineries.

This means that AA will happily apply YQ to their own long haul flights but not charge it for travel on another carrier - unlike QF who appear to charge YQ on every flight segment whether they are the carrier or not.

As an aside, it costs quite a lot to simply use an UK airport, e.g. £17.60 to simply depart LHR for a non irish international destination. If it not a transit you can add the £40/£80 to that making it cost up to ~AUD205 to simply leave the country.

In my XT reference above, note the charging of the [pre APR01] UB tax for having a LHR and a LGW departure (58.70UB - £14.30 + £6.80); if booked now it would be £17.60 + £9.50.

My UB is ZAR610 which converts to approx GBP39 or AUD80, sum of 2 LHR departures.

My AONE5 taxes booked through AA just came in at 5800 ZAR (approx AUD $765).

Plug your name and numbers in LAN e ticket It then should display all the taxes and surcharges

Has anybody had success in using this? For my DONE4 I've used by the AA reference (six letters) and the reference in my QFFF bookings (a mixture of six letters and numbers), along with my surname (I assume that's what it's asking for) but can't get anything.

Is there another tool available?

The booking references have never worked for me. But the 13 digit eticket numbers and my last name work.

The AA reference is a SABRE reference; LAN is looking for an AMADEUS reference.

If you AA booking has any BA, QF or LAN segments, there will be an amadues record locator available.

Other than that the ticket number MAY work. It has been inconsistant lately.

What does "EQ" refer to in terms of taxes? To put it in context, I received this message from Mindpearl: "It's possible for pricing ex-Namibia. I think it's +/- NAD48 000.00 excluding taxes EQ ZAR49 221.00" (re-typed exactly as it appeared in an email to me).

The oneworld website shows ex-Namibia on a DONE4 as NAD48000. I don't understand why the reference to South African rand and why it is 49221 when the base fare, ex-taxes, is 48000.

Where is the Mindpearl office you are dealing with located?

On the cross rates, 1 NAD ≡ 1 ZAR - they might be trying on a ~2½% commission on the conversion.

Dealing with Mindpearl in SA (CPT, I believe). Oanda.com is showing 1 ZAR = 0.98686 NAD. However, when converting to AUD, 1 = ZAR6.7390 and 6.6309. Yesterday the NAD was higher than the ZAR. I'd like to start in Namibia as I haven't been there but if it's cheaper out of South Africa than I'll start in CPT.
