Qantas has today announced Sydney-Santiago as the next route for its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with the national carrier also adding an additional three return flights per week between the two cities.*

From late June 2020, customers travelling between Sydney and Santiago will experience the Dreamliner’s next generation Economy, Premium Economy and Business cabins.

The additional flights – which will commence at the same time – will increase flights on the route from four per week to daily, adding more than 20,000 seats each year.

The crew on QF28 a few weeks ago were saying that this would happen next year. I guess it was inevitable given the impending retirement of the Boeing 747s. I wonder if Johannesburg will be the next Dreamliner route?

Like @docjames, I do wonder what the current ETOPS situation is for Qantas. The current southerly route is unviable with CASA's current ETOPS regulations (unless they've recently been changed). But if ETOPS 330 was allowed, it wouldn't be a problem.

The map below shows where Qantas would be allowed to fly at ETOPS 180, ETOPS 285 and ETOPS 330. (In the case of 330, the great circle route is not impacted.)

I wonder if they could get fifth-freedom flights out of JNB and SCL to create a 3-continent RTW and if that would be viable. Plenty of partners in South America with LAN and AA, although weirdly RAM doesn't fly to South Africa from what I can see?

They need to keep reminding people why J seats will cost almost as much as F - some recent J rtn fares to SCL have been clocking in at $15k!

This interests me greatly. Can anyone shed light on the status of this?

At the end of the day I would be far happier flying QF on this route on a twin engine plane. Have done it many a time with Latam but not really feeling the comfort I have with QF and their proven 747's.

It also shows that the general Australia-Chile route is getting bigger and bigger. This is good for all flyers.

SYD-GRU is presumably achievable with the 789 in QF confirm but how would it go on GRU-SYD? Tech stop in AKL, EZE or SCL? QF have dropped these sorts of routings with intermediate stops as they are often uneconomic.

I tend to agree. On my return trip to Santiago this year I was the only non-Brazilian in my row of 4 seats in the middle section each way.
