78min connection at JFK, same airline, same terminal. Am I good ?

Guys if I'm flying B6 international from PLS to JFK (landing at T5) then JFK to SFO domestic also on B6 (and departing from T5) should I be ok ?


The flights will be on separate tickets but I'm hoping that as long as I present both tickets when I check in at PLS my checked luggage should be able to be checked all the way through to SFO and at that point I should be issued with the JFK-SFO boarding pass as well ?


I'd like to purchase the itinerary on the one PNR but the B6 website won't let me. PLS-JFK scheduled landing time is 18:42 and the JFK-SFO flight is scheduled to depart at 20:00.


Would appreciate any thoughts and advice. Any reason why they wouldn't give me my boarding pass when I check in PLS or why they wouldn't check me all the way through ? Because it seems to me that if both of those things happen I don't see how I couldn't make a T5-T5 connection with the same airline, but that said I've been been to JFK or even the US.

You aren't giving yourself much margin for delays there.

If it is an international to domestic connection are you allowing time for customs and immigration? If required that could blow the whole time in one go.

No hope, you're arriving on an international flight and will have to reclaim your luggage and then go through customs and immigration and then recheck you luggage with another trip through security.

3-4 hours minimum time if things go well.

Perhaps the reason you can't purchase the fare you want together is that it doesn't meat MCT at JFK - the same reason why you more than likely wouldn't be through-checked at your first check-in point.

The 8pm flight would have landed into SFO at midnight anyway so probably next to overnight it and head west the next day.

This is sorta off topic but my own thread so maybe I'm allowed to do that lol but can anyone recommend a good hotel close to the JFK airport ?

Whilst you'll probably be able to have the bags tagged to DCA, you still need to collect them at JFK, and have them rechecked to DCA at the designated transit area. Based on above advice, 90 mins will be crazily tight! Good luck!

90 mins will be extremely tight and on separate tickets a risk not worth taking.

If it is within MCT, AA will protect a misconnect here. They have it in writing.

I understand the OW "protection" but JFK customs is notorious for taking ages if on a foreign (ie. non-US) passport.

Whilst protected, if there are other connections available at similar pricing, it would be worth having a "better" connection.

Our international experience arriving at JFK has been totally different.Always through quickly.Immigration and customs agents with a sense of humour.We have done it 10+ times.Usually from NRT so arriving ~1830.
That said if arriving at that time and on separate tickets I would stay overnight as very limited chances later at night if incoming flight delayed etc.

As for hotels the JFK area is not the most desirable.We have stayed at both the DT and Sheraton.Both quite adequate.There is an HGI next to the Sheraton which looks like a typical HGI so should be OK.

Last July I stayed at the Hilton New York JFK Airport and it was perfectly acceptable. As others have noted it's not a great area to stay, but this hotel has a shuttle from the airport and reasonable facilities, including a small Starbucks inside. It's also a short cab ride to the main shopping strip around Jamaica station, or you can do what I did and ride the local bus which stops right across from the hotel.

I think all of the hotels in the area have shuttles.The DT,Sheraton and HGI all do.When staying at the Sheraton I caught the HGI shuttle as they are side by side and it came first.

We found JFK to be mixed at processing immigration. Arrived in a full 777 and not an officer in sight for 10min. Other times like DrRon has said 10min and a sense of humour.

OT went through DFW the other day, brilliant no problem at all.

The above minimum connecting times show that the MCT for an online (B6 to B6) international to domestic flight at JFK would be 1.45 hours ie 105 minutes so 78 minutes falls way short of the mark and for that reason I would think that B6 would not through check your bags PLS/xJFK/SFO even though you will need to collect them at JFK in order to clear customs and immigration.

Even if the B6 flight PLS/JFK arrives into T5 and the B6 flight JFK/SFO departs from T5 the lower MCT of 1.29 hours still exceeds the 78 minutes you propose.

The Jet Blue website states that checkin & baggage close off is 40 minutes prior to departure at JFK which is only 38 minutes after your plane arrives from Providenciales. Turks & Caicos has no US Customs pre-clearance so you would need to clear customs and immigration on arrival in JFK.

I think it would be nothing short of a miracle for you to expect that you can disembark at JFK, line up for CBP clearance, collect your bag, line up again to drop off your arrival form before proceeding landside to B6 checkin possibly with a change of terminals & then checkin and complete your bag drop off within 38 minutes.

Look on the brightside - I'm sure one nights accommodation at a JFK Airport hotel will be cheaper than a hotel in downtown SFO that you wouldn't even make full use of arrival well after midnight

Not sure what you mean by the second pax? The OP mentionen that the B6 flights depart and arrive at T5 JFK which has the 1.29 MCT if the above graph is correct.
